i don't really mind if the enforcer is a bit of a dying breed, but i hope class act role players don't go the way of the dodo as well.

That was good, Bill. Glad to see the guy get a little respect. Some people aren't happy unless they're crapping on someone and he was an easy target.

Jody Shelley blob! Nice. Everybody hated his cap hit and term of course. Good on you for explaining out all the intangibles that Jody brought to the team. Best wishes Jody in Colombus.

Nice piece Bill.
I kinda have a soft spot for JS.
His face always looked like it he got the worst of the fight, maybe he was a fighter who bruised easily.

One of our chickens hatched 2 Springs ago and had a piece of the shell stuck on her neck. As all the hens get named after Flyers, this one was named Shelley.

The current roster in the coop includes
Roo, Reimer, the Schenn's, Simmonds, Shelley, and Richards.
Carter passed away last Spring.

Team USA destroying Canada 3-0 right now in the 2nd period of the final evaluation game, unfortunately looks like Stolarz wont see any time, they went with Jon Gillies who looks like his biggest competition right now.

It's over now and nah don't think so, i was just following it on the usa hockey site.

Game finished 5-1 for the US, i dont think Laughton dressed again and Stolarz was the backup for USA and didn't get in.

Jody worked his way to the NHL via way of the Johnstown Chiefs in the ECHL.
Both he and Homer had that in common except when Homer had his brief stint with the team, they were in the NAHL in the mid 70;s they were the Johnstown Jets and 3 EHL Championship Banners from the glory days of minor league hockey in the 60's. None of this veteran rule nonsense and caps
Of course they also had fund raisers on local TV (telethons) to keep the team in town, when you actually had pay your bills unlike many NHL teams of this era

Think they'll be able to fill up the Big House for the Winter Classic this year? Imagine if this stadium was used by the Red Wings regularly. Filling it up to 1/3 capacity would set NHL attendance records.
EDIT: Ok obviously filling it to 1/3 wouldn't beat attendance numbers from other Winter Classics. They would only have to fill it up 2/3 of the way to beat NHL attendance records, though.

While I don't like carrying an enforcer, Shelley was the definition of the cliche "Good guy in the room".

Even if the enforcer role does become completely extinct, we all hope that the kind of guy that usually fills that role in the NHL doesn't leave the game. Most guys who make their living in hockey throwing fists are widely known as good guys, who do whatever is asked of them on and off the ice.

Best of luck to Shelley in his retirement.

Who knows, they may in the future. Glad the Blue Jackets offer came along quickly for him, though.

Like many didn't care for the length of the deal for Jody Shelley but glad for him as a person he gets this chance right away.

Last update from Homer was all injured roster players (minus Pronger) would be cleared by early July. Take from that what you will. Given we're over the cap in August and he's coming off injuries its basically deciding what city you want a bag of pucks from.

I have known Jody for about 15 years, pure class act. Not a great player but a great leader. Guy will always have a spot in hockey. Well done Jody and congrats on getting a lot further than people thought.

He must have played well at one point in time.

The pure one-dimensional enforcer is nearing extintion but there will always be a place for enforcers who can play. Holmgren himself is a good example. Other good examples are Simon (154 goals), Probert (179 goals), and McSorely (118 goals), notwithstanding his shenanigans against Brashear. Hell, even Brashear (88 goals) - when he was with the program - was able to take a regular shift and add value when operating on the team's agenda.

I have zero issue with an enforcer that can hold down a job even if he never dropped his gloves. Guys like those you mentioned, certainly are not here just for their fighting abilities.

Hell, even Shelley was a competent defensive player, but without his willingness and ability to fight, he'd never have been in the NHL.
