if the GMs of both of those teams don't at least ask about price then they aren't doing their jobs properly.

Why not? There are better players than ROR in the league

what does that have to do with anything? no one said he was the best but if GM aren't constantly in touch with the rest of the league about player availability then they aren't doing their job. They might not be interested in a certain player but you can be rest assured they have asked about cost. Even if only to guage what another team is willing to give up or if a rival is interested. They need to know what is going on even if they decide not to get into it.

You think its a GM's job to ask every other GM what every player on their roster may cost? Do you know how much time that would waste?

No. Players that are. Available like O'Reilly was last year, yes GMs need to do their due dilligence and see what the asking price is

So because he was available, you believe Shero actually contacted them and tried to find out what the asking price was? are you kidding me? WHY would they need a player like him?

ROR wouldnt have been a rental player...there is a huge difference...he would be a core piece to a team...they traded Jordan Staal for a reason

I'm not saying NO GM's contacted Colorado about him, but you have to think about the teams that are rebuilding...he would be a decent piece to put in place as your 2nd line center for years to come...I think at this point, Toronto would be the best situation for him...playing on a line with Clarkson would do them both well IMO...but they went with Bozak instead...and thats fine...but a team isn't going to inquire about a player just because he's available...not ALL teams GM's would have inquired if their team had no reason to need a 2nd line Center for many years to come

Shero is one of the biggest wheelers and dealers in the league. If he didn't at least ask Colorado's GM what he his asking price would be for O'Reilly and what O'Reilly himself was looking for, he wouldn't be doing his job. That doesn't mean he was actively looking to get him, but he is a talent that if you could make it work without breaking the bank, then you might consider it. To think that Shero didn't ask the question at all shows a complete lack of understanding of how the hockey landscape really works.

What the hell would Shero ask about him for if he wouldn't be wanting to trade for him? There is something called a salary cap, They already have Malkin, Crosby and now Letang signed to huge contracts...he would not fit into the core any more than Staal did...he's not a rental player...Shero got a bunch of rental players last year to try and get to the cup, and it nearly worked if not for that embarrassing 3rd round... They haven't messed around much with their top 6 players in years now...and for very good reason...

Dupuis/Crosby/Kunitz
Neal/Malkin/Iginla

Please tell me why they would (frank) with that top 6 with the chemistry they have...they no longer have the cap space to make ROR take the place of Iginla...they have other players to attend to first

Asking the question and actively looking to acquire a guy are completely different things. O'Reilly is one of those players that if you can make it work, you do it. The price was obviously too high, but to suggest that Shero didn't even glance at the pricetag is both naive and assinine.

He would financially screw the team...he already held out from Colorado for money...you think Shero would want a player that does that? Holy hell...when you have one of, if not the best top 6 in hockey, you're not going to change that...

Just stop. GMs have said routinely that when players are available whether they are actively shopping or not, if they have a chance to improve their team they do their due dilligence.

They wouldnt be improving their team though, they'd be taking a step back, so you just stop...they did not trade Jordan Staal only to acquire a guy that would be no better and no worse...they traded him for a reason! SALARY...their offense is NOT the issue, its that they dont know how to play defense...

I try to. Some people just love to disagree and won't let up. It seems as if every fan base has their Todd. No offense to Todd as you can sometimes actually have a discussion with him

There was nothing concrete about what was said about ROR in this thread It was peoples opinions that all other 29 GM's checked up to see what the asking price of that player would be, even though they have absolutely 0 use for that player
