Yes, thought so, saw some interesting quotes by Max Domi on Gauthier, called him the team's MVP and has blocked a ton of shots and great on the PK.

Man, I can't wait for this season to start. There's a lot to be excited about--will Clarkson become a force of his own? Will Bolland bring the energy, grit, and winning mentality we expect from him? What happens between Reimer and Bernier?

Plus another year of watching Gardiner improve, McClement shut down everything in his path... here's hoping for a good season

I'm pretty happy with where this team is. Thanks Burke & Nonis!

A few words of caution.

I'm still sticking to my prediction that Verhaeghe will be better and more productive in junior and the NHL from that draft.

I really do think it is bent in TML's direction.

Basically it's Dion for Strome and a First

Colborne for some Dman

I like Dion and I think he can really log some solid minutes, but I'm not giving up one of my top draft picks from the dog days of the Islanders and a 1st for him. Who knows what that first becomes, yes the Islanders had a good year, but they are afterall still the Islanders. This not even mentioning Dion's contract and how it's almost up and he'll probably demand the moon.

And Colborne for a NHL Defenseman, for one is vague, and two I just don't think Colborne is really going to do much in the NHL...he's one of those poopty Bruins 1st round picks that we always wind up with. Chiarelli should just trade all of our 1sts for 2nds and 3rds because he seems to pick better players in those rounds and yes he's done well in the AHL, but poop so hasn't Chris Bourque and we all saw how that played out

And you also have Colborne's wrist injury, which really slowed him down, so that would make me nervous from NYI perspective

- RickJames77

That would be my starting point for any talks... I am only moving him if the return is good otherwise just keep him. Trading a proven top 2/3 (whatever you think) dman for a prospect with Zero NHL games is a risk. Dion is only 28 and has a lot left.

Who replaces Phaneuf for cheaper? No top end dman will come cheaper than his cap hit. And why isnt he good for the C role? Who would have been a better choice when he arrived in TO?
- TonkaPhaneuf

There are definitely 2 camps on Phaneuf: 1 'Phaneuf is a top15 d-man' and 2 'Phaneuf is an overpaid #2 D-man being played as a #1'.

Liles would have made a better C instead of Phaneuf.

And individually, there would be no better D-man on the team if Phaneuf would be traded; the argument is that the capspace could be better spent on a number of other players to make the team as a whole better.

I see where you're coming from. I like Dion, I just wouldn't do that if I were the Islanders. What do you think about the Colborne part? Fair, or do you think he'll break into the NHL?

Phaneuf is the best Leafs dman since McCabe.

*slithers away*

- AdamFrench

I think it's debatable. McCabe had some big offensive seasons...but his best were on some bad teams. I tend to discredit those seasons somewhat. I feel like phanuef can be a 50-60 point guy this year on a playoff team.

Phanuef improved greatly as a penalty killer and on his 5 on 5 play under carlyle. He also brings the intimidation factor of the big hit. Overall, based on his play last year I think he's a slightly better all-around dman.

I am starting to close the book on Colborne myself, he is 23 now. I hope this season he is able to get a chance and stick, but I am not confident in that.

not related but there is a Dane Phaneuf playing junior i just noticed when looking up some dion stuff

I understand the team concept, but at some point we will have to be willing to pay a defencmen more than 4-5 milly if we ever want a top notch dman on the team. In the end you get what you pay for, and i just dont want a bunch of 2nd tier defencemen on the team because they are cheap. Losing Dion makes this team worse defensively, as a whole.

I also think with the way Sutter raved about Gauthier, he has a great chance to make the team.
- LeafMan

Need a shutdown guy that can control the game. and he seems to have more offensive upside than first thought.

Incredibly weak argument.
