Morning
working from home today...sleeping in that extra 90 mins is glorious
Leafs sign or trade anyone while I slept? |
|
|
|
So..
Most probably trade destinations for Captain Dion...?
My opinion:
1. NYI
2. Anaheim
3. Dallas
4. Edmonton
5. Detroit
In my view, it is not anymore a question of IF Phaneuf will be traded, but a question of WHEN he will be shipped out.
No fit for Toronto's Captain role (future captain Clarkson already brought in to take over C in one year from now), and salary way to high of what he brings to the team. Toronto would be looking to lock in Kessel, McClemment, Kulemin and Bolland after this season, and Phaneuf's 6.5million+ demands would not permit the signing of all of these players.

Who would you have signed??
Who would you rather have traded for (using those picks)??
It wont cost us franson. We could have enough cap space to pay Kari 3.5 and Franson 4.5. That is more than enough to get it done. - burn
Not entirely sure. If we can pawn off liles, keep franson, then I dont care, Bolland is a good addition. |

really.. just get used to the idea of Toronto lining up a defense without Phaneuf.
It is bound to happen.
Phaneuf was brought in by Burke as 'the go-to man and captain', he has not lived up to expectations. Phaneuf is a good D-man, but his (future) caphit weighs too much on the team for what he brings. |

Phanuef is probably the best dman the Leafs have had since salming. He's one of the top 20 dmen in the league, if not 15.
He'll be looking for $+7M on a max term deal. There will be room to sign both him and kessel. Better to sacrafice easily replaceable players like Fraser/Kulemin than give up on Phanuef in his prime.

A) LOVE that so many fans are ready to bill Clarkson as captain because "HE'S A BIG TORONTO FAN"
B) Why exactly would Bolland be someone that management would be looking to lock up? His 0gp and 0-0-0-0 stat line?
C) If you trade Phaneuf what defenseman do you get back that plays that many minutes, puts up his points and does as sturdy a job as he does?

Totally agree, Phaneuf should be extended at 7M/yr for 8yrs. Front load his deal so he is tradable later on in his deal. |

A) LOVE that so many fans are ready to bill Clarkson as captain because "HE'S A BIG TORONTO FAN"
Never said this - by the way, Phaneuf was brought in by Burke as well with the plan to be future captain, so not such a weird view..
B) Why exactly would Bolland be someone that management would be looking to lock up? His 0gp and 0-0-0-0 stat line?
To my understanding Bolland has played some hockey over the last couple of years already...
C) If you trade Phaneuf what defenseman do you get back that plays that many minutes, puts up his points and does as sturdy a job as he does? - markmark
Individually, Phaneuf is the best D on the team right now. As a D-unit though (hockey is still a team sport), overall points and results in general would very possibly be better (D without Phaneuf vs D with Phaneuf). Gardiner will play more minutes and expected to improve, the same goes for Franson..
