I don't know, maybe they are getting a look at other defensmen first, I expect him to play against USA. - LeafMan
they may of been advised that he may not be available if he plays well in leafs camp
tho personally i think putting him the NHL now would be a mistake |

Man, I can't wait for this season to start. There's a lot to be excited about--will Clarkson become a force of his own? Will Bolland bring the energy, grit, and winning mentality we expect from him? What happens between Reimer and Bernier?
Plus another year of watching Gardiner improve, McClement shut down everything in his path... here's hoping for a good season
I'm pretty happy with where this team is. Thanks Burke & Nonis! |

really.. just get used to the idea of Toronto lining up a defense without Phaneuf.
It is bound to happen.
Phaneuf was brought in by Burke as 'the go-to man and captain', he has not lived up to expectations. Phaneuf is a good D-man, but his (future) caphit weighs too much on the team for what he brings. - MaximusAurelius

THIS
so many people forget the first and most crucial role of a d-man is to stop the other team.. not just put up points
and franson fraser mostly played against third and fourth lines - Dozzer
Yup. People really forget that. Fraser does a solid job shutting down plugs, and on the pk. But people who pencil him in for top 4 minutes, or even replacing gunnar on top pairing dont get this point. Fraser would get lit up.
Having franson and gardiner play 2nd pairing minutes and an impoved opposition will be great for their development, but I dont want to rush them to play top lines. Let Dion and gunnar do that. |

I think it's because he's the only returning Dman?? If he's available he's already on the team. |

Probaby cause he's a lock. They want to look at guys on the bubble imo. He'll probably play one game. |

I also think with the way Sutter raved about Gauthier, he has a great chance to make the team. |

He was had for scrubs in a terrific trade by Burke and has been the Leafs best D-Man. I don't get what the disappointment is. |

you think that offer is that outrageous?
i will include Bozak too then - senstroll
I really do think it is bent in TML's direction.
Basically it's Dion for Strome and a First
Colborne for some Dman
I like Dion and I think he can really log some solid minutes, but I'm not giving up one of my top draft picks from the dog days of the Islanders and a 1st for him. Who knows what that first becomes, yes the Islanders had a good year, but they are afterall still the Islanders. This not even mentioning Dion's contract and how it's almost up and he'll probably demand the moon.
And Colborne for a NHL Defenseman, for one is vague, and two I just don't think Colborne is really going to do much in the NHL...he's one of those poopty Bruins 1st round picks that we always wind up with. Chiarelli should just trade all of our 1sts for 2nds and 3rds because he seems to pick better players in those rounds and yes he's done well in the AHL, but poop so hasn't Chris Bourque and we all saw how that played out
And you also have Colborne's wrist injury, which really slowed him down, so that would make me nervous from NYI perspective |

haha ya I'm a little nervous about that too. At least try it out in training camp and preseason.
However, I think Franson will be improved defensively if he is with gardiner. Last season he had fraser to cover for him all the time and was the pmd. He has a good shot, passing and vision, but not really a puck rusher.
Put him with gardiner, instruct him to let gardiner rush it and for franson just to be an outlet pass kind of guy. Then let him focus on using his size and strength for defense. |

No disappointment (apart from not being a right fit for the C role).
The reason why Phaneuf should be traded is the fact that 6.5m+ caphit weighs too much for this/next seasons on Toronto's team structure..
At the end of the day it depends where next year's caphit will go to: if it's 66/67million, Phaneuf probably would be best traded or not re-signed, if it's around 69/70, best decision probably would be to keep him.

Yes, thought so, saw some interesting quotes by Max Domi on Gauthier, called him the team's MVP and has blocked a ton of shots and great on the PK. |

Who replaces Phaneuf for cheaper? No top end dman will come cheaper than his cap hit. And why isnt he good for the C role? Who would have been a better choice when he arrived in TO? |
