Individually, Phaneuf is the best D on the team right now. As a D-unit though (hockey is still a team sport), overall points and results in general would very possibly be better (D without Phaneuf vs D with Phaneuf). Gardiner will play more minutes and expected to improve, the same goes for Franson..
- MaximusAurelius

Why would they very possibly be better? You know that if those two were getting more minutes, it would be against teams top lines.

Yes Franson put up points and I love Gardiner, but they did so against mostly 2nd, 3rd and 4th lines.

I don't think Franson would fare too well or score many points trying to defend against Crosby, Datsyuk, etc...

Phanuef is probably the best dman the Leafs have had since salming. He's one of the top 20 dmen in the league, if not 15.

He'll be looking for $+7M on a max term deal. There will be room to sign both him and kessel. Better to sacrafice easily replaceable players like Fraser/Kulemin than give up on Phanuef in his prime.

- doinktheclown

I agree with this, i dont see why people want to discard Phaneuf so easily. Do people fail to realize what it costs to have a top 20 dman in the league these days. Not sure why folks think a top pairing dman should come on the dirt cheap. He may be slightly over paid, but i would take that over having no top pairing dmen at all, anyday. Who would we get thats better AND cheaper? Really i dont see that happening. The next guy to step in and make over 6 milly would get all the same abuse that Dion gets. Leaf fans
Plus if we trade Phaneuf, i would have to change my name here

Agreed. I have high hopes for Gardiner too...but he still has a long way to go. His mistakes don't get talked about right now so it gives the impression that he is further along in his development than he actually is. Same thing happened with Schenn. If Phanuef was traded and Gardiner was put front and center, everyone would be talking about how Gardiner has taken a step back in his progression, when in reality, he isn't ready to be a #1 dman.

THIS

so many people forget the first and most crucial role of a d-man is to stop the other team.. not just put up points

and franson fraser mostly played against third and fourth lines

Gauthier also has two goals as well, bigger role on the team in the two games, called a warrior by Sutter, didn't want to bring it up,

For a second there last year it looked like Dallas was going to take over that role
- RickJames77

It is a revolving role, owned by the current team who has Jagr.

So..
Most probably trade destinations for Captain Dion...?

My opinion:

1. NYI
2. Anaheim
3. Dallas
4. Edmonton
5. Detroit

In my view, it is not anymore a question of IF Phaneuf will be traded, but a question of WHEN he will be shipped out.

No fit for Toronto's Captain role (future captain Clarkson already brought in to take over C in one year from now), and salary way to high of what he brings to the team. Toronto would be looking to lock in Kessel, McClemment, Kulemin and Bolland after this season, and Phaneuf's 6.5million+ demands would not permit the signing of all of these players.

Ohh and Finn with a goal and Rupert also called a warrior by Sutter. Only Leaf to not contribute is Rielly, of course he has not played, benched, not good enough.
