Still find it odd that the R word (i know) was deemed so offensive while racist and homophobic stuff was so rampant back then...

I can't answer that. But let's be honest - we can be rude and condescending just as well without the homophobic slurs (to others or regarding oneself), the racial slurs and the use of the "R word" and similar.
