I still can't comprehend why everyone say we traded them and they won a cup like they single-handedly walked into LA and led the team to victory.

Richards and Carter were the centerpieces of the Flyers, they were compliments to the centerpieces in LA. The return the Flyers received has out-performed them consistently. Why bother thinking though right?

I can't believe we let Dan Carcillo go! Won a cup with the Hawks. Silly Holmgren.

I hope that is why the brought back Hextall. Holmgren can keep Clarke company in the Board of Directors suites.

Matt - I can see how you decide to take time out of your summer to attack The Flyers and I would to if I was a Canes fan. A team that has failed to make the playoffs 6 out of the last 7 years, but Canes fans seem ok with it.

The canes are not able to attract any big name free agents, nothing like the types of players The Flyers attract. The canes were not even able to land FA Jagr this off season and they let beloved goalie Dan Ellis walk away as well, they didn't bother to qualify Nodl.

They have not improved at all and unless something changes for them regarding the roster this upcoming season most likely miss the playoffs again.

People are so quick to point out Paul's mistakes, but what has kept him a job?? Lets look. Signing highly sought after FA Vincent Lecavalier for 22.5 years for 5 years, a low cap hit considering some of the salaries FA's received. Convincing Ray Emery, who just won a cup with the hawks to sign with The Flyers at a low cap hit, trading for the rights to Mark Streit & was able to sign him long term as well. Brought back Hextall as an assistant where he will be helping to build the farm system. What about when he traded Zhitnik for 1st round pick Coborn. Traded Forsberg for rights to Timmo and Hartnell, then signed them both long term. Going back to another one of Matts comments The Flyers did trade Carter and Richards, but not like they got nothing in return. Carter brought Jakub Voracek and 1st round pick that turned into Sean Couturier, and Mike Richards brought Simmonds & Schenn. Yes I was sad to Richards go, but the return was quite good.

Pronger would still be playing if he had not been seriously injured against the leafs, you going to hold paul accountable for that as well?? At the time Flyers fans were happy with the Pronger trade. He is part of the management team now, so not a total loss for The Flyers.

Snider has deep pockets, I wouldn't waste your summer worrying about how he spends HIS money.

If I was a canes fan I would be pissed off as well, after all mike komisarek isn't anything to be boasting about. Does focusing on other gms mistakes make it better to be a canes fan????

Sort that chart by overall. Philly is #3. So I guess that means that people came out to see a non-playoff team in Philly and other arenas around the league. Is that Montreal all the way down there @ #11?

Lupul, Sbisa, 2 1sts and a conditional 3rd. 4 years left on an over 35 contract that hamstrings the team during the off season because it counts against the cap. We are playing him to play and he can't and because it was an over 35 contract there is nothing the team can do.
Prongers contract is indeed an absolute and total loss.
Streits contract is just as stupid.

DARN YOU HOMER FOR SIGNING ONE OF THE BEST D-MEN IN THE GAME TO A RISKY CONTRACT IN ORDER TO KEEP HIM HERE!

*yawn*

If Homer were as dumb as people make him out to be, he'd spell his last name "Ferguson, Jr."

as a flyers fan that knows/cares very little about the canes - let's talk about them.

Aren't they the same team that just signed Alexander Semin to a 5 year $35 million dollar contract when no one else wanted him? How many years before this one becomes a bust?

I seem to remember some hype about wrestling Jordan Staal from the penguins last off-season and how Carolina was going to be a team to contend... but I can't seem to find them when I look at last season's playoff brackets?

Team D? Am I missing something or is the Carolina D really this bad --> Pitkanen, Gleason, Sekara, Harrison, Faulk, Komisarek? Wow and the flyers D is bad? Hey pot, meet kettle.

Holmgren has definitely made mistakes, and he definitely deserves blame for them. This blog is sports talk levels of lame, though.

If the canes get $$$ from league revenue sharing or ever have there is zero credibility to whining like this. Its like people on welfare complaining about what cars or possessions people with jobs have. Maybe teams that cannot sustain themselves without $$$ from the top 6 in revenue should shrivel up and die

Why didn't the Habs trade for him if it was so obvious that he was going to go from the Flyers terrible backup to the Vezina winner in one year?
As bad as the result looks no one, including Blue Jackets, thought that was going to be the result.

OK, point by point comments on this poorly researched(outside of figuring out the ticket costs) blog designed to get hits:

- Yes, the Flyers utilized the compliance buyout feature of the new CBA to shed two contracts that would have severely hampered them under the artificially reduced salary cap. So did Montreal, the NY Rangers, Toronto, Buffalo and a host of other teams. Tampa Bay spent more buying out Vincent Lecavalier than the Flyers will be on Bryzgalov. Strangely, no criticism of Steve Yzerman in your blog.

What does this say about Lecavalier? He is average now.

-Pronger was signed to his current deal at age 34, and has been basically forced to retire because of a freak injury. Pronger's prior injury history gave no indication that his career would be over 2 years later. Age had nothing to do with his inability to continue his career.

Still an insane contract for any player that would last into his 40's.

-In the Carter and Richards trades, two of the players added (Jake Voracek and Wayne Simmonds) have outscored Richards and Carter since the deals were made. The Flyers also landed 2 young forwards with tons of potential in Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier, as well as prospect Nick Cousins, who was among the leading scorers in the OHL last year.

While Carter and Richards played big roles in the Kings winning a Stanley Cup, they were not as vital as Jonathan Quick, Drew Doughty, Anze Kopitar or Dustin Brown, among others.

Kings win Cup one year then advance to Conference Finals and lose to Cup Champs.
Flyers miss playoffs. 'nuff said.
Potential means very little in the NHL.

-You also totally ignore the impact/influence of Ed Snider's role. The Flyers went after Bryzgalov because Snider publicly demanded that Holmgren get a big name goalie. There's plenty of circumstantial evidence that the Carter and Richards trades had Snider's finger prints all over them, for off ice issues. There's a litany of news reports about those two, so I won't bother to rehash it.

Those two led the team to the finals one year and got booted soon after by an ungrateful front office and fan base (nitpicking over 20 somethings partying).

Congrats on the added hits you'll get for criticizing the Flyers. Should easily dwarf the usual 15-30 comments you regularly get. I don't mind criticism, I mind poorly researched trashing of a team, just to get hits and drive comments

- Jsaquella

That ridiculous buyout clause has saved the Flyers from Homers madness. They would be screwed 10 ways to Sunday stuck in the contracts of Bryz, Pronger, and Briere.

Anyways, don't waste your time Karash. Flyer fans and reality don't mix. You'll find out soon enough, welcome to the division.

Congratulations; I gave you the hit you were looking for.

Too bad your mind-numbingly awful "analysis" means there's no point in coming back to read anything else you write.

There are various other bloggers on HB who I read consistently who don't write about the Flyers, like Travis Yost and Todd Cordell.

You're not one of them. Because, well...you're just not very good. Spend a little time improving your craft -- criticizing the Flyers for hits is easy.

Writing something that actually has merit, for a team that has missed the playoffs twice since 1994...that's a little harder.
