Excellent points.

Not to mention... Unlike, some smaller market teams, the Flyers organization has a ton of CASH. And, they aren't afraid to use it... But, access to a ton of cash is useless with the cap in place. But, Homer can attract more interest from UFA's with longer contracts. $28M going to Ilya and Danny, who cares? Good for them. It does not effect the Flyers Cap - which is the key variable for Homer to manage.

Homer Job is to manage the cap and put the best team on the ice... The cap management is fine. His teams made the playoffs every year, but this past year (injury filled year, short year...). Almost a Stanley cup 09-10. Completely revamped a team in 10-11 and still made the playoffs... Actually quite an accomplishment.

Saying that access to cash with the cap is useless is VERY inaccurate. Spending up to the cap still gives big markets a huge advantage.

For such a great team not to have won since 1975 - complete and utter embarrassment.

Trade JVR, Carter, Richards, BOBROVSKY...

- BingoLady

JVR is streakier than the Windex streaks on my window, Carter & Richie have been outmatched with respect to production output from their return, and well the team (frank)ed up with Bob, but it happens. When was the last time Montreal did anything exciting via trade or Free Agency? Your team is like watching paint dry...

I think the point that was trying to be made is that money is never, and will NEVER be an issue while Snider is in control. Yes, the rich teams all spend close to or at the cap, but it's teams like the Flyers where compliance buyouts don't even illicit a blink from Snider as it's pocket-change... That the ramifications of having cash allow a team to function without worrying about profit and attendance and all the nuances of running an NHL franchise. You do as you please and spend under the Cap and all is well.

With revenue sharing, why aren't all teams spending to the cap?

6 for Habs vs last for Philly.

I guess you may get McDavid in 2 years though..

- BingoLady

Nonsense.

Gary Bettman will find a way to make sure Pittsburgh gets him, should Crosby become injury prone and Malkin goes back to the KHL.

Couturier would be way up on that list if he didn't already have so much NHL experience.

Even though there is revenue sharing, the "poor" teams still have a budget to stick by, and that is usually well below the Cap ceiling.

Hey, this season was a bust, what can we do? Most, if not all teams experience them. You can't remain on top forever, it happens to all sports teams. The Flyers have just been lucky to always be in the mix for playoff and Cup contention. The shelves are slowly being re-filled.
- Flyers_V88

Its not nor should it be luck, if you don't plan on things going wrong you have failed. If they don't have the depth to overcome injuries, they have failed. If our goaltending sucks and has continued to suck for 20 years, THEY HAVE FAILED. Take a glance at the Flyers record of drafting D and Gs, its pathetic. Chris Terrion may be the best D the team has drafted in a long time ffs.

I'd be interested to see the numbers next year for wins/$ spent if you include the compliance buyouts . Unlimited money has every advantage , the compliance buyouts were just another way to screw the teams with less money.

Was the author of this blog too lazy to see that the Flyers return on Carter and Richards has already been extremely good? Voracek alone has outscored Carter, Simmonds alone has outscored Richards, and the Flyers also got Brayden Schenn, Couturier and Grossmann out of those trades.

So what if the Flyers are buying out two players? They aren't the only team in the league taking advantage of the compliance buyouts the league put in place to go along with the reduced salary cap. Bryzgalov was a disaster, but Briere was an extremely productive player for five years in Philly who just isn't worth a $6.5m cap hit anymore.

The whole article is predicated around the idea that Pronger was a bad signing when the only reason Pronger isn't playing is a freak eye injury that could have happened to any visorless player at any age.

I believe that any team that needs revenue sharing should have their minimum cap increased by whatever amount they get from the teams paying in. If they can't meet the minimum mandated by the CBA without assistance then perhaps it should not be there.

If the money was unlimited it would be great but there is this little thing called the salary cap which greatly limits the teams deep pockets.

Good playoff run in 2013.

Since the Habs last cup... 20 years ago... Neither Habs nor Flyers have a cup. The Flyers went to the playoffs all but 3 times, and Habs did not go 7 times. I'm not going to check, but all-but-3 times in the past 20yrs has got to be the best or close to the best.

As a fan, all I want is good exciting hockey, and a shot at the cup (ie. making the playoffs).

That's not what I was saying , I was talking about the buyouts , so you missed my point
