Got to think about future years as well. Buying out Liles will hurt the Leafs in a major way. The Leafs do not need Colborne, he is slow and not very good defensively. He is also pretty timid despite his size.

Getting rid of Liles, without taking on cap and acquiring some sort of value to this team now is worth Colborne.

A voice of reason. Gotta say, most of the statistical bean counters would say if the kid hasn't translated his game to the NHL by age 23/24, he's more likely going to be a replacement call up player at best. I question if Flames shouldn't target someone like Biggs & Liles & give you guys a better return. Possibly a 2nd(which for us is almost like a late 1st) & a more developed goalie prospect like Ortio.

Yeah they probably won't. I'd do Liles and Ashton for a second though. Not a big fan of his.
- TheLeafsInsider

I'm not convinced Ashton is an NHLer, I'd probably do that deal. I feel the same way about d'Amigo so him as well I guess.

Do you think Ortio has any value right now?

Franson, Liles, D'Amigo, 2015 4th and 2016 5th

For

Wotherspoon, Russell and 2014 3rd

Upgrade Russell to Liles while D'Amigo adds top 9 depth on the wing. Franson upgrades your defense for the future and the 4th and 5th round picks help round out Wotherspoon's value along with the 2014 3rd round pick.

Wotherspoon is a solid D prospect and Russell gives us a cheaper option at D in oppose to a resigned Franson and 4M/per Liles. Russell reminds me a lot of White; small and gritty. D'Amigo is a future 3rd line versatile guy who could end up playing on the 2nd line, who knows.
Franson is the most valuable, bringing in Wotherspoon and 3rd (prospect and pick).
Liles and D'Amigo traded gives us some cap relief and a cheaper version of Liles in Russell, which also means depth on D.
I personally like it and think that Franson is an excellent top-4 dman, but because we're almost at the cap we are not in a position of "power", however bringing in 2 potential top-4 dmen and a 3rd rounder isn't that bad considering the pros that come with trading Liles' contract.

Liles for Blair Jones and a pick

Jones competes for a spot in Leafs bottom six, pick just helps even out value. Calgary gets NHL dman who will help one of their powerplay units.

Done. Doesn't have to be anymore complicated than that.

This is news. Were desperate? really? Toronto would be better off with any of the following:

1. Taking the first and third from another teams offer sheet
2. putting Liles in the minors
3. Signing Franson later this year.
4. Trading Franson to one of 10 other teams for something better then CALGARY's third round pick.
5. buy out Liles - we got the money.

There is no way what your prosing is even remotely reasonable for Toronto.

- akermack

No team will offer enough to get you a 1st and 3rd when yoj have no cap space to match a smaller offer.
Liles in the minors doesn't help you as his salary still counts on the cap.
Are there 10 other teams that will give better offers that can afford Franson themselves?
Sure, buy him out. You still have to pay some of his salary and it counts on the cap.

One leaf fan likes it. I suspect many others including myself would not. Also don't see the purpose in trading Franson AND Liles.

This is my first comment ever. Long time lurker, but the stupidity in the above response forced me to contribute.

1. If Franson is seeking upwards of 3.34M (he's been reported as looking for close to 4M otherwise the Leafs would have signed him long term for ~3M ages ago), then any offer sheet between 3.35M-5.04M automatically comes with a 1st AND 3rd from the team that creates the offer sheet.

2. Burying him in the minor is an option, but not the best one since it only offers ~900K in savings.

3. What? Lol. You think he DOESN'T want to play in the NHL this year? Worst case scenario, he ends up going through the Subban route. Remember how that turned out?

4. I'm sorry, but you're a complete idiot if you think that Franson isn't worth more than a 3rd round pick. Seriously. Please stop being a fan of hockey because you give the sport a bad name. I mean, please remind me again how many d-men on the Flames put up 29 points in 45 games last year? Here's a link to help you figure that out: http://flames.nhl.com/club/stats.htm

5. Teams are still allowed REGULAR contract buyouts, but they count against the cap. So, YES, the Leafs CAN still buyout Liles' contract and it would actually only count as a 875K hit over the next two years (then it increases in Y3 and drops in Y4-6). Thanks for showing where YOUR knowledge base is.

These are only 5 VERY POSSIBLE options the Leafs have when it comes to Franson.

Seriously, please research and think before you post nonsense.

From a hockey trade perspective(helping both teams)

Liles, Colborne and a 4th in 2015 (traded 2014 to Chicago) for Curtis Glencross?

- PatC80

Terrible trade proposal. Glenx is worth a lot more than that package to the Flames. He would cost you Reilly at least.

almost 31, hasn't produced 50 pts even when playing with solid line combos at decent minutes. Clarkson also played sheltered minutes. Curtis Glencross possession wise is no Clarkson; a player i'd more accurately compare Glencross to: Benoit Pouliot

Most Glencross will fetch you is a late 2nd and some middling prospect I fathom. You do recall your GM is Jay Feaster, correct? So probably not even that good of a return.

- jerseyleaf

Wow. You need to get out of your box. Check possessikn rates a little closer not to mention Glennies points over the last few yearsk

I don't think the Flames would consider this.

Glencross would fetch a 1st, +, +, in a deadline deal.

Lilies, Blacker, D'Amigo for Glencross. (Cal retains 550k of Glencross's salary)

No.

GlenX brings at least a 1st or top prospect with top 6 or 4 potential + or he doesn't get traded. Period.

From a Flames fan's perspective what would it take to land Giordano + Glencross? (Don't worry about specific names if you don't want to)

As a Leaf fan I'd offer Franson + Liles + Colborne/Percy + 2014 2nd. I imagine the Flames would want more though?
