Got to think about future years as well. Buying out Liles will hurt the Leafs in a major way. The Leafs do not need Colborne, he is slow and not very good defensively. He is also pretty timid despite his size.

Getting rid of Liles, without taking on cap and acquiring some sort of value to this team now is worth Colborne.

you won't get any value for liles, and colborne on the 3rd line at his salary is much better than moving him for nothing.

From a Leafs fan, this is an excellent, thoughtful article.

As others have noted, I'd be reluctant do give up Colborne in a deal. A couple other names, however, might get it done (Ashton, McKegg, D'Amigo). The Leafs lack a 2nd and a 4th next year (or 2015, possibly, with the 2nd), so supplementing these drafts with an additional mid-level pick might hold appeal.

Not sure if Kris Russel adds anything, though. Our roster is pretty much set for next season and, even at 1.5m, he's another left-handed shot and salary potentially buried ($600k cap hit). Not sure, though. It might be small enough.

Still, great article. This is one of the very few trade scenarios posted on HB that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. Kudos.

Thought it was a good deal. Glencross would upgrade the Leafs bottom 6.

Glencross is on the wrong side of 30. (almost same age as Liles) Colborne played sheltered minutes with the Leafs last season. Could be your 2nd line Centre for several years. Plus a mid-range draft pick.

I hear ya...I at least know you aren't trolling.

But in the past 3 seasons Glencross has really stepped up his game. He has shown the ability to score thirty in the past few seasons as well. Might have gotten there 2 years ago if he played a full season and was on pace for over 30 last year. Not only that but his cap hit is only 2.5 for this year and next. I think it could be argued that his contract might be one of the best in the league. I believe that under these circumstances Glencross would fetch more than Iginla did last year. I know he isn't a superstar, but he is exactly what a team who is trying to make a deep run would want.

I think colborne at his contract with bolland and mclemmant make a great 3rd line. Kule won't get a sniff of PP time, and even on the PK he is replaceable now. His contract isn't worth his playing time. He has value and I think could be packaged with maybe, Reimer and a D prospect to get a solid D for us (after we move Liles of course).

I liked what colborne brought in the playoffs, he looked far less soft and I think given the right circumstances could be an effective player for us.

You're probably the only person other than Cloutier and Feaster that would want a 1st for Glencross and actually believe that's his value. He's a 3rd liner at best playing better minutes because it's the worst team in the nhl
- jerseyleaf

You don't know what you are talking about. The flames would get a 1st and a mid (meh) prospect for Glencross at the trade dealine. Glencross has one of, if not the best value contracts in the league. He is not a 3rd liner at best. He is a player that can play up and down a teams lineup depending what they want him for. If they want him for speed and scoring he fits in the top 6. If they want him for gritty play on the 3rd line he fits.

Watch more hockey teams other than Toronto and you might be able to bring something in discussion in the future about players that don't play on the leafs.
