Does any current Flyer or Prospect hit this list (besides Timmo)??? Hypothetically, if Streit's past seasons were all with Flyers - he would make the list. I'm not sure - at his stage in his career - if he could make it now. But, he's the only hope I see. I just don't think Gus, Ghost, Haag, or Morin have a chance. Could be good defenseman, but not on this list.

Its way, way too early to say whether or not Ghost, Haag, or Morin have a chance. If you're playing the odds, then yeah... the odds are stacked against them (we are talking about Top 10 Franchise All Time), but to say they don't have any chance doesn't make much sense.

Also: We're all REALLY sure Cory Schneider is THAT good and can carry the load?

#13 in the NHL?

- johndewar

C'mon, Schneider has started almost 100 NHL games. He's a bona fide elite goalie.

None of them have that kind of pedigree, but it's possible.

He's the next Jim Carey.
Jonathan Bernier is the next Cory Schneider.

To be fair, Kim Johnsson made the cut and he was Mr Irrelevant in his draft class. Last guy picked, behind 285 other players.

He's played splendidly. But he's never been a full time starter and he's played less than 100 career NHL games. He put up great numbers behind a good Vancouver team.

Bryzgalov was more proven and had been a Vezina finalist before he arrived in Philly.

I would submit Schneider has had it kind of easy since Luongo became kind of a human dart board in Vancouver.

In Jersey, he's gonna have to replace an all-time legend of the game.

But hey.....no pressure.

Exactly...The Flyers did well upgrading their Defense prospects. Several are likely long term NHL'ers. However, the early projections put most are on the Defense-Dman side - not the Offensive-Dman side of talent. Sure, some may develop into a two way defenseman, and threaten to bump Kim or Duchesne off the list - but, I be in stock if another Howe was hiding in our prospect pool.

How much pressure is there, really, in Jersey?

They have a smaller fanbase and a fairly non-rabid press corps. He's not stepping into Toronto, Philly or Boston. My bigger concern would be the inexperience, although he is a good goalie

That's true....I guess I am giving the Jersey hockey market too much credit. All 25 Devils fans will be crushed if Schneider can't carry the mail.

And I don't doubt he is good. I just question and have doubts whether he can be "the guy", let alone replace Marty Brodeur.

Those are my doubts. He handled the Vancouver media well, and by most accounts he's a good guy and doesn't stir the pot, so the key will be his ability to play as well as a full time starter as he did as a back-up/time splitter.

Just for the heck of it: Top 10 defensive defenseman in Flyers history

1. Mark Howe
Simply the best defenseman the Flyers have ever had at just about every facet of the game. Enough said.
2. Ed Van Impe
Many of you are too young to remember Van Impe in his prime. He was nasty, positionally sound and was always on the ice in the last minute of a game or period to protect a lead.
3. Kimmo Timonen
Makes the game look easy, almost never makes a bad decision with puck or in his positioning.
4. Eric Desjardins
A slightly more physical, not quite as defensively sound version of Timonen
5. Brad McCrimmon
If you don't believe me, ask Mark Howe. Howe has many times referred to The Beast as the perfect defense partner.
6. Chris Pronger
If he had remained healthy, he would be #2 on this list behind only Howe.
7. Jimmy Watson
Basically he was Timonen without the offense.
8. Kjell Samuelsson
An octopus on skates is how one opposing coach once described him. He used his reach to make it almost impossible to beat him to the outside and took full advantage of playing in the clutching and grabbing era.
9. Brad Marsh
Another guy who took full advantage of the clutch and grab era. Marsh was utterly fearless and as good a shot blocker as I have ever seen
10. Marcus Ragnarsson
Wasn't here long, but I pretty much can't remember him ever being out of position, and he was very seldomly beat one on one.

Honorable mentions:
Joe Watson
Chris Therien - if you only counted games against Jagr, he would be in the top 3!
Brayden Coburn-go ahead and laugh, but when he's on his game he can be a top notch shutdown defenseman.

To be fair, neither Marsh nor Samuelsson played for the Flyers during the height of the clutch and grab eras. Samuelsson returned during it, but was a 6th/7th defenseman at that point.

I'd also have McCrimmon ahead of van Impe, Desjardins and Timonen.

Yup. Imagine if you will, McCrimmon playing with Desjardins like he did Howe. Desjardins would've been able to threaten even more offensively because of his defensive partner.

This is what competitive journalism is gonna cause. No one on this site cares about the Canes, and Flyers blogs typically top the list of most replied (Except for Pistachio's ). He gets very few hits on his blogs, so he's finding a way to get hits, by pissing off the largest fan base on the site. The best thing to do is to not even read it. If you don't like him, feel happy that if we as a group ignore his blogs, he'll be making almost no money off of his poopty blogs. We should start a pledge or something

agreed

and he'd trade the Canes' roster for the Flyers' heartbeat

obviously some criticism is deserved for any GM, but i honestly get the impression that some of the more absurd Flyers hate over the years stems from people being angry (read: jealous) that they are always proactive and agressive in trades and the FA market. They just see the Flyers making bold moves and they hope they fail - in part because they're secretly frustrated that their teams dont go for it in similar fashion.

Honestly, had he done more research and criticized more than just Holmgren, I would have agreed with him to some extent. But ti was a typical hit piece and ignore a lot of the realities that impacted the decisions made.
