What do you think we have to add? Also, don't pretend you know for sure thats the case. Its very possible, but truth is, none of us know how much sugar needs to be added. There was a Avs fan offering a low pick and crappy prospect straight up for Liles. - pbrsimps
To be honest, I don't really follow junior hockey, and my Marlies knowledge is spotty at best. Others are more qualified to answer the question.
I'm just really not that high on Carter Ashton. I don't think he will ever be a full-time NHL.
Just my opinion. |

True, but Liles is a d-man capable of 30-40 points with PP time. There's still a market for those, especially when it will cost nothing more than a poop pick. - mykokes
I still doubt liles gets traded until the season starts. Nonis will send a couple of guys down to the ahl, to clear up another 1.5 million |

While a buyout of Liles would have the Leafs affecting their cap for 6 years, it would given them $2,583,333 in extra space for this year |

Oilers have the same situation. From an Oilers article.
Following the singing of Sam Gagner, Scott Howson explained that because Gagner had filed for arbitration that a second buy-out window would now be available to the Oilers. The wording in the CBA isn't very clear, but we've confirmed with Mr. Daly that this the case. For those interested in the nuts and bolts of why, Article 11.18 provides a starting point. - faceto27

Hey, anyone remember when Matthew Lombardi, David Steckel, Vesa Toskala and Jason Blake couldn't be traded? - mykokes
We ate some of Lombardi's salary, and he was a pending UFA.
Steckel was given away - and he was a pending UFA.
Toskala and Blake were exchanged for a salary dump coming the other way - which wouldn't help the Leafs if they were to do it with Liles.
And funny thing: Leafs fans think they won the Blake/Toskala for Giggy deal.
It was a tie at best. |

Could it be that Nonis played this Fraser scenario just like this. Forcing Fraser to file for arbitration so that it gave him another window of opportunity to orchestrate a buyout??
Interesting. |

With the cap down this much this season, how many good players will end up not playing this season because of no cap space left on their teams (RFAs) or no contract at all (UFAs)..? There's a bunch of players that will be left unsigned, and might need to take an obligatory one year break in Europe to return to NHL next year.. |

And Liles is a season and a half removed from scoring 47 points, did nothing wrong his first season here other than getting a concussion. He's not Keith Ballard. Whereever he lands he'll go back to being a 30-40 point d-man playing 20 minutes a game, for the price of 3.875M, that's not that bad. Problem in toronto is we have enough d-men of his ilk or we'd still be using him. And I don't think Carlyle ever liked him |

trade liles and retain as much as possible (i think 50%, so 1.875). might be a better option.
I think someone would take him (and we don't have to add a prospect) @1.875. |

You think he wants to stay? He wants as far away from Carlyle as Grabo did. |

but is it worth it.
If he's head over heals better than his competition how is he going to get better?
There's no challenge for him.
To bad the leafs can't send him the AHL is were he should be playing.

I loved the guy when he first arrived here.
He simply hasn't been the same since the concussion.
In any other year, you could probably find a team willing to take a chance on the guy.
This year? I'm not so sure. He was all over the map last year. He was a healthy scratch in 3 out of 7 games in the playoffs.
This year, nobody wants to add another potential problem to the roster/cap hit.
With three years left, it's a huge risk. |

I don't watch any junior hockey, but I find it hard to bleieve that it is no longer a challenge for him.
Have him play top minutes. Have him take a leadership role. Have him go to the WJHC (imho, one of the best things you can do to develop a player).
There's nothing wrong with being methodical in player development.
And that's especially true of d-men. |
