Thought Brennan was already counting against the cap though? - Yeti1181
He isn't in my top 7 right now. But cheap replacement if you remove someone. I say he starts at the Marlies. None of his 600k will be on the cap. |

gotta disagree with you on this one BL. here's my reasoning...
say PK signed $25 million/5 years
1) cap coming down to $64 million for 2013-14. that'd be an additional $2.25 million on the books this year. would have made things a bit uncomfortable this offseason. gained some flexibility there.
2) you're right, PK will be looking at 8 years, $56 million IMO. agree, cap hit is $2 million higher. but remember: when this contract kicks in, PK's "hypothetical" deal would only have 3 years left and then? BOOM. he's UFA. does he stay or does he go? we do not know. so if you can lock him up for 8 years, you're guranteeing that he's a Hab for at least 10 years. whereas with the 5-year deal, you're kinda playing with fire. and then if you DO sign him after that 5-year deal, good chance you're paying even more than $7 million if the cap continues to rise.
anyway, point is not that it worked out perfectly with PK. the 3 seasons following next year, Habs will be paying $2 million more than the could have. but gotta think the last 5 years of the deal will make up for it. - DoubleDown
ya true... I was more thinking that Bogosian likely used PK as an example in negotiations saying they will save money on him in 2 years, or risk losing him. They needed to lock him up to keep the core in tact and growing.
I was applauding the Habs at the time for the way they handled PK - bridge deal was the right move. But then the (frank)er went and won the Norris didn't see that coming.

Have to look at Reimer, Bolland and Kulemin.
Of Colborne has a decent year....
McClement will want raise for sure if he duplicates....
It's gonne be a tight tight squeeze. - Cooshie
Reimer question mark if he loses starter he's gone
Bolland no raise or mediocre
Kulemin 1 mill raise
Colborne big question mark |

If he goes down up to what 925 doesn't count I think.
Edit. But yes technically as of right now he counts. They can be 10 percent over all camp though. |

Gonna be a tight squeeze next year again...!!!
Kessel will eat almost half that and depending on what happens with Reimer, that's another 1-2mill....then there is a raise to Kuli and Bolland....
Might be harder next year then this year!!! - Cooshie
$2.5M comes off the books from other buyouts, so that's Phill's money right there.
Gardiner is going to be interesting though.
Shouldn't be too tight though.
I personally don't see Dion's cap hit increasing if he is extended.
can't see how Bolland earns a raise unless he puts up 20G playing 3rd line minutes. He's probably gone, or signs long term at similar cap hit to current deal.
Kuli worries me. Don't want to lose him, but I doubt they will be able to sign him. In his mind he's taken discounts the last 2 contracts. Somebody will give him 4 x $4m for sure. Leafs won't.

Lots of question marks for sure...but potential for disaster if things go well (cap wise)
What if Gardiner continues on? Good rookie season, very good playoffs, steps up huge next year - add a mill or so to get him done.
Then there is another 2 mill for Kessel.

Yeah, Gardiner could be x factor if he has a big year....could be extra 2 mill right there.
I did forget about buyouts coming off the books - that helps bigtime. |

Capgeek had Brennan up there before Gunnar signed to give 6 signed Dmen, but moved him off roster once they signed Gunnar and Ranger.
Dion-Gunnar
Gardiner-Liles
Fraser-Ranger
Holzer
these are the 7 D on the cap right now as per capgeek. When Franson signs, one of them (Holzer) will be moved off roster.

another reason I think Franson could get traded, might price himself out of the cap, even next year.
if Gardiner passes him in value next year, it will get pricey |

We could see a similar trade to the Toronto/Nashville trade that brought Franson here. Some team like the Islanders taking Liles and a pick/Prospect for a 4th liner/ AHLer
To Islanders: John Michael Liles and Matt Finn
To Toronto: Colin McDonald - steve362
Bitter pill to swallow. Kind of realistic in its own sad way though |

It's a subjective thing by capgeek. I rarely agree with their line up 100 percent

Im confident he will do lots of good for all 4 teams but just wasnt too impressed on his comments of taking down old Leafs pics from the ACC - when I go there next - will I expect to see pics of Orr and McLaren in the hallways? - MTL1
Meh, I'm sick about reliving the past, its time to accomplish something in the present.
I dont think he was being literal. |

ya for all the people that thought the isles would throw in strome to take on a contract
you'd have to think the leafs would have to give up something considerable if liles has no value to anyone
the big question mark is whether or not he has any value to anyone else |

Like Burn said, the addition of retaining cap makes things kind of interesting for the Leafs...(frank) when do we see teams losing their first rounders when they take on 6 mil in cap for some superstar? |

So Phaneuf gets close or same what he's making and phil gets a 2 mill raise leaves us with good chunk of cap space. Who else to sign next year - Yeti1181
I think Phil will get about 8million |
