Saw it. Pretty ridiculous how pharmacists, family, and even the league can allow that to happen.

Family, friends and teammates. That's what bothers me. I don't expect pharmacists or the league to have any integrity, but you would think a friend or teammate would. He was taking pills at that rate and drinking with them. Crazy.

It's hard to say how much his family or friends knew. I know I saw something about his brother being involved in some way as well, but I don't think his parents knew. Especially when you take into account that they're suing the NHL over it.

The lawsuit is irrelevant. They, like many people, would likely play dumb and fleece the league for everything they can get regardless.

I know nothing about that family, but its not hard to imagine that if they knew, no one wanted to rock the boat. He's their closest link to fame and money they had.

Not suprising though. Sad. Family and fiends are often the unknowing enablers that help support this lifestyle.

There's a bunch of different articles out there about this whole thing. It's been pretty publicized to say the least. I'm sure the knew about him going to rehab, but who knows how much they knew was going on after the fact. Like I said, his brother had some sort of involvement if I'm remembering correctly, but his parents really may not have.

They didn't live in the same country, let alone zip code. It's hard to get a good idea of how someone is by only talking to them on the phone here and there. Not to mention the amount of traveling required for the sport.

You make some good points, but they knew what he did for a living. They cared so much but they let him work as a goon in the NHL. You know what I'm saying?

I get what you're saying, but I think you're assuming that they had more power over him than they did. Do you think people decide what career to have just because it's what their parents want? They could have voiced how displeased they were with it. Doesn't mean it had any impact on his decision. I'm pretty sure that his mother did not enjoy watching him take countless punches off the face. Maybe this is just the female in me coming out, but I can't see how she would have ever agreed that it was a good idea for him to do it. That doesn't mean that she could change his decision though.

Not trying to be a Richard here, but lets assume everything you're saying is true. Why do they deserve money?

Because the league was negligent in their handling of his injuries. Just because he allowed himself to be a punching bag doesn't mean that he wasn't handled improperly and therein is where the problem lies. The League should be responsible for some way with the fact that the issue was able to get that bad.

Is it a reality of any major sport? Sure. But there should be measures in place that help prevent it. The fact that there were so many different people giving him the amount of pills that they were proves that there was no control of it at all.

Is there ways around the control measures that could be put in place? Sure. But at that point the onus falls on the individual and not the League.

I'm really just playing devils advocate. None of us have any clue of any of this stuff for the most part. But everyone was quick to point the finger at his family and friends so I was just taking the flipside of the coin.

A direct quote from Garths latest blog...

Today, Schiestel was signed the 24 year old Hamiltonian signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Hamilton Bulldogs. He can play in the AHL or ECHL.

What?!?!?! How do I keep getting sucked into reading that hacks blogs??

I blame myself.

yes because in the world today everyone except yourself should be held responsible. One of the problems with society especially North America, its everyone elses fault.

That's a BS response
Obviously u really like him as a player and really do want him here
I thought it was only 89 that responds to post with that kind of negativity
I made some legit points,
But if u don't wanna talk about it that's fine

Why would he hold responsibility for Derek Boogaard receiving too many pain meds? Do you ever read back what you write?

Todd is alsways right. And a badass never question him. He is better than you... or something like that.

Also, The DR that he went back 2 three times in one week and got 3 prescribed 40 pill dosages should be required to stop practicing immediately.

Oxy and hydro are strictly controlled. Doctors have to keep records on it and they are watched closely. When my ex passed away I had to hand over the methodone and morphine and flush others down the toilet in front of them and sign off.
