8 years?? For a guy that had a good half season... that's a recipe for disaster.
- Mr_Smokey

Maybe we can see if Jason Blake wants to sign long term and dipietro too !!! Then when TO goes bankrupt they can move the Leafs to the Kingston midget floor hockey league to play for the Tim Horton s double double Cup.

But when looking at the guys around him... No. Heck, Gilmoure had a bigger year with the Leafs than Sundin ever did. I would argue he was more of a superstar.
- aminnes

Maybe..... but he also had better players on his wing than Sundin ever did.. Think that helps.

Yup.

Did I misquote you?

You ranted several times about how bad Gunnarson's contract is, then just said Liles contract isn't that bad.

I'd take Gilmour over Sundin, Gilmour brought so much more than just talent.

I have the fact he hasn't been traded. Seems like a pretty good source to me.
- Big_Lightnin

Could be an attempt to pressure the RFA's to sign, in fact I'd say it definitely is.
- MapleLeafsFTW

yes, Nobody wanting Liles and his $3.8M cap hit is strategy on the part of the Leafs to get players who are better than Liles to take less money than him.

That Nonis is a crafty one, I tells ya

- Big_Lightnin

That's not what I said at all, you clearly aren't as crafty as Nonis.
- MapleLeafsFTW

if you say so.

Who? Hoglund. Thats it. All the other guys he played with did just as well elsewhere.
- aminnes

Are you serious??? the man made everyone around him a better player

I don't see it at all. Most of those guys did just as well elsewhere. I really don't see him at that level. Great player in his own right, but to say he elevated other guys games, not so sure.

You seem to pick and choose what you want to present as your argument. Yes, I said Gunnarsson's contract was a mistake to sign for 3 years, considering we need to resign Franson, and the fact we have Reilly more than likely making the team next season. I also stated that Liles contract was a mistake to sign for the Leafs, length wise, considering we had Gardiner in the pipeline. However, Liles contract hit is reasonable for what he can produce on a team that does not implement Carlyle's system. In other words, he no longer fits into the Leafs plans, but he is still a serviceable player for other teams. He is not untradeable, he can produce and play to his strengths in the right situation. It's an inconvenient contract for the Leafs, not for another team.

It is a tough decision, Sundin was more talented but Gilmour was still very talented and would jump you if you took a cheap shot at a teammate, or make a big hit. Better leader in my opinion.

you said "pressure the RFA's to sign"

I said "convince the RFA's who are better than Liles to sign for more less money than he makes"

If they have to "pressure" them to sign, it would logically be for less than Liles makes, right? Cause they can't sign them for more than Liles makes and fit them under the cap.
Right?

I'm sorry you were unable to make the same deductive leap. I'll use bigger letters and more spaces next time.

Hoglund was only in the NHL because of Mats.

Renberg saw his numbers rise after coming to Toronto.

Tucker spent considerable time with Sundin after the lockout and cashed in big after a 28 goal year.

Kyle Wellwood eclipsed 40 points in both his rookie and sophomore years, spending considerable time on Sundin's wing. He'd only ever acheive that once again in the middle of the prime of his career.

Mike Johnson was a Calder runner-up riding shotgun with Sundin. That would not have happened under any other circumstance.

Steve Thomas' career was brought back to life at age 37 playing in Toronto, as well. I seem to recall Berezin - Sundin - Thomas being a line at the time.

I guess you could add Berezin, as well.

If you want to go really obscure, what about Lonny Bohonos? Came up due to injuries, skated on Sundin's line and scored 9 points in 9 games in the 1998-99 playoffs.

Excuse after excuse for the Leaf player wearing the C. Whether now or then. Where's the making those around them better?

Imo Franson was really good this year and I like his game a lot. I would pay the man and move somebody else. Love Franson's sneaky quick wrister he does from the point that he gets through traffic, he's really good at that. He's a big man and I thought he started using his size and showed he can stand up in the playoffs. I hope they hold onto him.

Some players that really come to my mind are Antro, Poni and Steen. Keep in mind these guys were just coming into the league and weren't the players they are today.
