Gillis brings it on himself. Toronto has just as much media scrutiny and you don't see this kind of drama in Toronto.
It feels like there's a new soap opera going on with the Canucks every couple months. At what point do you say, alright this is become really (frank)in distracting to the sole premise of our team......... winning hockey games. GTFO Gillis. - Sheppy99

Not chirping at all...
Horvat was ranked 15th out of north american skaters. TSN compared him to David Backes..
Do you think David Backes is a legitimate #1 C? - PatC80
Is that your entire basis for the comment? |

to be fair to the media and fans in Vancouver, none of this would be blown up to the level it has been if Gillis would just learn to keep his yap shut and stop sticking his foot in it.
He's created the negative press by feeding it with his comments and then not following through on his statements. I don't hate the Canucks but Gillis is Brian Burke 2.0 with a number of bugs that have yet to be hotfixed. - Isles_since_6
This should be the foreword in Mike Gillis' biography.

That's a pretty blanket statement with absolutely nothing to back it up. One of TSN's analysts (I can't remember which one) had Horvat listed as his, will be the surprise of the draft player in the pre-draft show. - KB3Point0
How is it a blanket statement? he projects as a top 6 forward.. Like Backes..
Frederik Gauthier projects as a top 6 forward too. |

I agree. Trading him to Edmonton would have been a really bad move for everyone involved. However, if you think about who was in desperate need for a solid, young goalie at the deadline, Tampa Bay rears it's head, and I think that would have been a good deal for everyone involved. - BruHAWK
I thought Tampa would have been the ideal spot too, except they have Lindback and Bishop and seem content to risk yet another season on two completely unproven goalies. |

In the cap era, how much longer can the twins expect to play together for? They ain't cheap and their styles are identical. - acmidd28
a bottom feeding team just trying to reach cap floor could easily take them on if they wanted...Islanders come to mind right away if they wanted, the only highly paid player they have that comes right to mind is Tavares...lots of teams, in fact most teams have more than 2 6+ plus players...the ones that don't are the bottom feeders...i'm not saying this would ever happen but another team that comes to mind are the Flames...they need a #1 C in a baddddd way...and they just cleared cap space from bouwmeester and iginla in the past year...also its a possibility they play in Sweden together too...again not saying thats likely and they'll probably end up retiring as Canucks after a full career with them, no early retirement ala kovalchuk |

Well, they picked Bishop up at the trade deadline. I'd find it hard to believe that if Tampa Bay knows Schneider is available at the deadline that they don't get him. It was exactly what they needed. |

So he could be a potential #1 center. You stated that he WILL NOT be a #1 center. That's a pretty strong assertion with nothing to back it up. |

I'd be worried about that. The last guy Nonis said was a top six guy, who was going to score more than people think was Patrick White.
Just saying. |

Every player is available for the right price. Tampa clearly didn't meet Gillis' price for Schneider, or they just didn't have interest. I was surprised they didn't try to pull off a trade the season before. Schneider and Edler for Hedman and something would have looked good for both teams. |

The funny thing about the whole "Schneider would be great in TB" thing is that Nonis offered him along with Edler, Bourdon and a 1st for Richards in '08
TB liked Smith, Halpern and Jokinen better and that is just one example as to why Nonis only lasted a year in Vancouver. |

not quite sure what Nonis is doing in Toronto these days, or what his plan is. definitely operating with a "win now" mentality. |

There's two different points of time w're examining here:
1) 2013 Trade Deadline
2) 2013 Draft
1) At the trade deadline, previous to Tampa Bay picking up Ben Bishop from Ottawa, there were some serious question marks with their goaltending (I think there still is) At the deadline they still had the potential to win the Southeast division (I think at that point they were 4 points out of it). If Schneider is available, I cannot see any scenario where Tampa Bay doesn't trade their first round pick plus to get him for a couple of reasons. He's young, has an affordable contract, he's proven, and has the ability to get them into the playoffs. As well, while the draft may be deep this year, it's not deep in goaltending, so by getting Schneider you a filling the biggest glaring hole in your team.
2) Tampa Bay has a top 3 pick. They are guarenteed at this point either Jones, Drouin, or Mackinnon. You have acquired Ben Bishop at the deadline and have 2 young goalies going forward. Schneider is now available but the asking price is your first round pick. While Schneider will become the best goaltender on the team, his value to Tampa is a little less since they have somewhat addressed their need at the trade deadline. As well, now instead of valuing your first overall as an unknown entity (which would have been the case at the deadline) you are now comparing Schneider to one of the three above mentioned players. Ultimately, as most teams in their position would, value the prospect of Stamkos and Drouin over Stamkos and Schneider for the future. |

Ian's right. There being a constant soap opera is a Vancouver thing, not a Gillis thing.
Go back to the 90s. We had the Nedved trade demands. The rumours of Brown and McLean's wife. The Bure trade demand. The ownership circus as McCaw took over the team and boxed up Arthur Griffith's stuff and kicked him out of his office. Linden being stripped of his captaincy without even being told. Messier / Keenan. Then the team got so bad and the dollar dropped so much that there were rumours the team would be relocated. Burke returning. Brashear incident. Not having a true #1 goalie for years. Cloutier / Lidstrom. Bertuzzi golfing comments to Wild in game 7. Cloutier Porsche rumours. Bertuzzi incident. Ownership lawsuits as Aquilinis took over team instead of Gaglardi. Naslund's choking comments. Finally getting a true #1 goalie in Luongo and then turning on him because his wife wanted to live close to her family during a "difficult" pregnancy as Lu was on the road half the time. The team finally developing a #1 goalie and then being slammed for not trading him before he fully developed (how do you get more in a trade by trading him BEFORE he develops into a true #1). The Luongo trade demand.
The soap opera is a Vancouver thing. Getting rid of Gillis will not change it at all, it will only change the cast. |

And a great example of why it's best to develop players fully and trade them when their value is at it's highest rather than trading them as under developed prospects! |

Well that is a HUGE assumption on your part that Yzerman would have traded his 1st round pick (which at that point looked to be a very high one) for Schneider. I doubt it would have happened.
If they had acquired Schneider they'd likely have finished a few spots higher. One can easily assume they could have got an extra 5 points (they did lose 11 of their last 14). In that case the Canucks would have drafted 7th and likely drafted... Horvat. |

Why?
Luongo doesn't owe the Canucks anything? Does he? Whether fact or factpinion, Luongo was told he will be traded. The guy didn't want to be there. Gillis has said numerous times he has deals for Luongo, some of those, Luongo has said Gillis never talked to him about. Gillis never delivered.
Maybe, Luongo hired a new agent cause he really doens't want to be in Vancouver anymore?
Just because they traded Schneider, Luongo has to be ok with everything now?
