Not much more. Your over rating a rental player. No one is giving up multiple 1sts or 1sts and A+ prospects for Vanek for 2 months. - OneKaneOneCup
A team will have desperation to make the playoffs like Atlanta when they traded for Keith Tkachuk.
See the Doug Weight trade to Carolina in 05/06.
Someone will overpay because someone always does. |

Right like someone overpaid for Gaustad. The Gaustad trade needs to stop being used as a comparison. He filled a specific role a few teams were looking for. If every trade were based on how good a player is compared to Gaustad, Pominville would have gotten us 3 1st rounders in return |
|
|
|
Come on. Moulson has outscored Vanek 82 to 78 in the last 3 seasons plus adding a 1st. Like I said if Moulson doesn't resign trade him at the deadline then and get at the very least a 2nd and a prospect. You are just over rating Vanek at this point. - sbroads24
and Vanek has 175 points to Moulsons 151. Perhaps you undervalue Vanek. |

And one of the better scoring wingers in the league doesn't fill a playoff teams need? |

I don't. He's not a superstar and we have won nothing with him as our best player. |

I'm leaning towards that as well.
I'm also thinking Washington as the second team. And if the Sabres are willing to take salary back I could see the Jets as a wild card. |

Vanek and the Isles make too much sense IMO. Washington too. Both teams desperately need talented forwards that aren't perimeter players |

Vanek makes sense for any team that's gonna be in the playoffs,
As long as they can fit him under the cap
I'm not too worried about the return for Vanek,
It's Miller that's starting to make me nervous
We've gotta get rid of him ASAP...
And hopefully get something decent back |

I think in order to get a decent return that it will take an injury to a playoff contenders starting goalie. Plus, I think we will need to eat some cap to get a better return. |

An injury or an team who's starter is sh!tting the bed.
If and this is a big if Vancouver ends up moving Luongo(he wants out) a deal for Miller would be the next move IMO. |

I am willing to risk that. People might disagree but this team is better with Vanek. I do not want the Sabres to tank a year because I can't accept our young players learning how to lose. I think if we are in the playoff hunt, and I mean anywhere 5-7, having Vanek and risking the loss is worth it. Playoff experience for young players means alot. Plus, if we are doing better, we might go into a buyer mode and Vanek will decide to resign here. It's all a bunch of what-ifs though. - Dwight K. Schrute
Serious question. Do you think this team is a playoff team with Vanek? If so, I think you are in the minority. |

So your plan for a rebuild is to keep players who don't want to be here and won't re-sign and finish with a pick in the #8-12 range again. Cool. I think that doesn't help us at all. |

No, my plan would be to compete and see where the team is near the deadline and make that decision. If it's tanking that you want maybe we should dump Hodgson, Foligno and Ennis as well. |

I'll be the first person to say that getting into the playoffs should be a priority every year. The 8th seed can win the cup. We've seen it recently. But finishing 10th or 11th in the conference is not going to help us. I'd rather have us stink for a season and get the kids some experience and get a top-3 pick to help compliment the rebuild in addition to what ever assets trading Vanek and Miller would get us. |

If special teams are in the top ten and slightly above average goaltending occurs
this team is a fringe playoff team with or without vanek |

Then we end up with just a 1st round pick for Vanek instead of possibly losing him for nothing. How about this scenario, Sabres surprise us next season, are in the playoff hunt and Vanek is our best player. Do you really think Darcy moves him then? How great would that be if we had another 1st round knockout plus lose Vanek for nothing. Darcy is trying to keep his job every season, he will not do what's best for this team long term if we are making a push. Best option IMO is to move him now and not make it possible for this situation to get difficult later - sbroads24
great point. If the sabres are in playoff contention by the deadline, Vanek has to sign an extension or he has to be traded. If anything other than those two options happening, then Darcy should be lit on fire and pushed in the inner harbor. |

If he gets traded they only have to worry about fitting half of his salary under the cap. Not too much of an issue really. |
