Did you watch any Marlie games? He's dumb. Makes terrible decisions.

Paul Ranger has played 11 NHL playoff games in his career

Which would be 4th most behind Liles, Phaneuf and Franson

Are Bouwmeester and Wisniewski the 10%?
- Twist

Green, MArkov, and Wisnewski

Green because he sucks defensively, MArkov because he is too injury prone.

Wisnewski because I really haven't seen enough of him, even though he may very well be better.

Bouwmeester is underrated in my opinion.

Yeah, I get that sense too, it was love hate from the beginning.

He didn't get ice time, and when he did, he proved what he can do.

Now we may not be as accomodating because Dion just has has has to be on the Leafs.

Bugger. Just give Franson 3y/12m

Just trade Dion to the Islanders....They'll take anyone

Congratulations Dave Nonis...you're officially making our suspect defense even worse. This guy is NOT an NHL calibre defenseman. And his signing seems like it will have to come at the expense of someone who actually is.
- djamon

Another one of these "I know beter than a NHL GM" posts....multiple teams bidding on a non-NHL calibre defenseman...this one takes the cake. Not only does Mr. Djamon know better than Dave Nonis, he knows better than multiple NHL GM's who were making offers on behalf of their teams...baffling The NHL really should start an executive training program...

You're on an island here.

Yeah, I know.

Obviously there's other moves coming which we can only guess at. If Liles is traded tomorrow for a 2nd from NYI I'll be a little more relaxed. But I don't want to lose a guy like Franson (or even Fraser) over Paul Ranger. He's walked away from the game once already.

Wow folks are getting really amped up over the signing of a 6-10 D...
This doesn't mean Phaneuf will be traded, it doesn't mean a deal won't be worked out with Franson.

Could be time to sell high on Franson though..?

A place that would constitute a possible extension would yield a higher return.

I thought of Komisarek when I saw some of thew things he did in his own zone. He has more skill than Komi for sure...but his brain...

Good to see ranger sign. I'm a little worried about franson, it would be a stupid move to let him go.

How about those jays! Lol I wonder what Vegas odds are now. So predictable.

I play defence, and I always have these discussions with people. It's tough to argue online, but I'll give it a shot.

I believe that these are your tasks in order of importance as a D:

1. Defensive zone play
2. Transitioning out of you zone
3. Minimizing risk
4. Points

There are already 3 guys for your team on the ice meant to put pucks in the net. A Defenceman's first job is to prevent the other teams 3 guys from doing the same. This is why I find it hard to praise Phaneuf, while Gunnarsson constantly covered up for him all season.

Gunnarsson does #1 extraordinarily well. He is always in the right position and always sees the play developing so he can act accordingly. While Gunnarsson doesn't have a great first pass (i can admit that), he still manages to get the puck out of our zone quite easily.

He doesn't take big risks, he only pinches at the right times, and he is always chooses the safest play, which works the majority of the time in our end.

#2 is where he is at fault. He will not be a points guy, he doesnt have the hands for it. However, put him with a guy that does, and watch what happens, case and point, Phaneuf. I would sell Phaneuf now, before he changes his pairing and they realize that he needs to be insulated with a Defensive minded guy like Gunnarsson.

That's my opinion at least, take what you will

what is the penalty to a team if you operate over the cap limit? do you loose draft picks, is there a fine? or do you actually forfeit games or something?

I'm sorry Mr Deeps. I thought this was a forum for expressing opinions. My mistake. I tell you what...why don't you just tell me what opinion to have and I'll go with that?

I hope you remember this advice the next time someone disagrees with an NHL GM.

That'd be tough, not every team welcomes cast offs with open arms like the Islanders do.

We should ask Flyers fans. Pretty sure they made that research lately.
