Doug Armstrong is a very good gm. Petro is a very good young defenseman. Good gm's don't just give a player anything and everything he wants. Good young defenseman don't just sign for what three gm offers.

A deal will be made, Petro will be here for a long time.

It is all posturing...He originally said he was not going to take an offer that didn't have a 7 in front of it for an offer sheet, then he went back to telling his agent to work only with the Blues...The Blues have never been a team that spends to the cap ceiling, and that most likely won't change...they want the deal done, he wants the deal done, it just takes time...while that occurs, it gives hockey guys something to speculate about during this very dreary time before camps and preseason starts...

It's an absolute joke that teams do this with their "Best Player"... People rag on the Flyers for alot of things but you dont see this happening there! They get their key players signed and let the guy's they really dont want, walk
- twpguy

Yup... they sure did lock up that great goalie in Bryz! Good thing they didn't let him walk (with millions in his pocket)

Norris trophy winners also don't normally have to only play in 42 games.

Let's see how Subban does in a full season before talking about him as the next Bobby Orr.

Not to mention he didnt even deserve the norris in that small sample. Suter was a rock on the backend. He should have won it easily

I hate how forwards dressed as defencemen like Subban, Letang, and Karlsson are getting Norris nods. Pay no attention to actual defense like Shea Weber, just look at offensive stats, great idea...

I've seen Eric O'Dell play at the Igloo in Mt. Laurel. While his hands, vision, and even his shot are strong, his skating leaves quite a bit to be desired! He does, however, bring many of the intangibles that coaches covet.

You all seem to have missed the point of the post.

He was referring to the Flyers RESIGNING players to long term deals, instead of letting negotiations drag on.

The Flyers' buyouts of Briere and Bryzgalov are the result of UFA overpayments, not mismanagement of players already under contract.

He was also saying how the Flyers are the class of the league the way they treat players.
Regardless though... lets look at it from a re-signing point of view. They sure signed Carter quickly to a lengthy contract that he thought would have him in Orange for life... then shipped his butt outta town just as fast!

Usually it is a top ranked offensive Dman who wins the Norris. Perhaps there should be an award for defensive DMen. We could call it the Pylon Trophy.

Nobody said that.

He said "It's an absolute joke that teams do this with their "Best Player"... People rag on the Flyers for alot of things but you dont see this happening there! They get their key players signed and let the guy's they really dont want, walk"

What Philly does with their players after signing them (keep 'em, trade 'em, buy 'em out) or what other teams do with their RFAs after signing them wasn't the point of the comment. I think his point was that the type of situation we saw with Ryan O'Reilly or P.K. Subban or Drew Doughty doesn't happen in Philly.

Philly gives their big players big bucks and if it turns out to be a mistake they deal with the consequences. The consequence last season was missing the playoffs.

Man, I'm watching Petro work out as we speak. He's up here in Vaughan skating with some other pros and man oh man, does he look good out there.

Too bad he's not a Leaf!! LOL!

Suban isn't a real comparable. He is a guy who got hot during a shortened season.

We've seen Ryan Whitney at a close to point a game for half a season before he got injured a couple yr back. If he had a contract coming up imagine what he would have gotten if he had done that in a lockout yr.

Subban is like a stock that peaked and will likely go back down. It may peak again at an even higher point but his play chart is going to fluctuate and be volitile.

Petro is a safe bet with strong resistance points. You know his play will not dip past a certain point and you won't see a huge leap in his progress or regression. You know that his peak can be as high or higher than Subbans and will likely stay there long term.

There is not a fan outside maybe a handful in Montreal that would trade Petro for Subban straight up.

Not a good comparable.

Sign Petro long term now while you can get him for less than you will 2 yrs from now.

Or better yet, trade him for Subban and get Petro out East.

What's that? He makes $2.875 for 2 years and then will likely sign an eight year $48 million contract when this was done at $6 million per season.

So take a look at 2 contracts and we're talking a 10 year $53.75 million deal or $5.375 per season. Most people thought he'd sign for $5.0 to $5.5 long term so it is right where he would have been anyway

- willey101

6mill/yr for PK!? Maybe if they signed him long term before the Norris win. He's going to get 7.5/yr at least on the re-up.

Now I'm confused. When people call Phaneuf a pylon they're really saying "great defensive defenseman"?

Pietrangelo is a special case. It's no secret that defensemen are commanding a premium nowadays, and ones with franchise-player upside are exceptionally hard to find. As such, the Pietrangelo camp is included to skip the bridge contract and go for the superstar deal right now.

...

be aware of the Jets "Under the Radar" signing of Ice Caps star Eric O'Dell. The kids was a second round pick by the Ducks a few years back and does nothing but score at every level he has played. He was sort of lost in the depth chart shuffle in Anaheim, but Cheveldayof knows this kid well.

They should sign him long term now. Once the cap starts to rise over the next few years, contracts will be much larger.

Yay! Throw more money at the players. Then the fans can pay more money so that the owners can afford to pay the players more money. Then they can raise prices again!

You should watch hockey sometimes. You would see that he is actually a damn good defenseman and that last year wasnt a fluke...not norris worthy but def one of the better d-men in the league

The Avs only have 1.4 mil more in Cap Space than the Blues so it'd doubtful they have the means to blow the Blues out of the water... and even if that works, you can kiss Landeskog goodbye next off season. The Blues have shown they bite back on offer sheets (even if the target is misguided).
- BerglundsGrundle

Yeah, but we have 12m tied up in centermen we don't really need now and can move at some point in order to make up for spending the picks. The way the Blues' finances, from how/who they're paying, to their front office strategy to not spend to the cap, limits them to a far greater degree. That was kind of the point. We have a lot of liquidity, so to speak, and have a big need for a #1 D, so why not take a shot?

Go for it. What would you offer him? Remember it will have to be enough to make the Blues not match.
