Leafs will trade Liles for a pick. Which will allow us to not only sign Kadri(2yr/6.5m), Franson(4yr/16m), and Fraser(2yr/2.6m) but also will allow us to aquire Kyle Clifford from LA for a pick and sign him to a 2yr/2.8m dollar deal.
- dwoo33
4 years is too long for Franson. 3 years 12m.
Still wouldn't be surprised if Dion got moved. It's just kinda hard to think of which teams would have an interest. Surely EDM makes sense, but the price for Dion shouldn't be that high, considering we didn't give much to get him.
Also, any deal involving Dion should have a conditional 1st rounder if he resigns with another team.
So something like
Dion
conditional 2nd(if Hemsky resigns)
_______
Smid
Hemsky
Conditional 1st
I think this deal's fair because there's good reason to believe Dion would stay in his hometown |

Cap hit comparables to Carl Gunnarsson
Barret Jackman/Bryce Salvador - 3.167
Chris Phillips - 3.083
John Ericsson/Jan Hejda/Andrew Ference/Dennis Seidenberg - 3.25
Stephane Robidas/Trevor Daley - 3.3
Robyn Regehr/Andy Greene/Marc Methot - 3.0
That's the going rate for d-men that are 3-5 on the depth chart, with the ability to play to step up to a top pairing in certain situations (gunnarsson-phaneuf, Seidenberg-Chara)
When we had Beauchemin, Gunnarsson was on the 3rd pairing with Komisarek. When we traded Beauch, Gunnar moved up to play with Phaneuf and has basically locked it down ever since.
On a 3 year deal, it's a fair deal. Especially in a market that has a tax bracket as heavy as ours. If he's an RFA in Dallas, Nashville, Tampa or Florda, he makes the same amount after taxes if he signs for a 2.5-2.7 cap hit. |

I don't think we'll trade phaneuf. He'll get extended at his same cap hit of 6.5. We need him and have no replacement. |

Can't get over how high everyone is on Fraser.
Don't get me wrong, he was good. but that was on a 3rd pairing, with a guy like Franson who had a very solid year.
Gunnarsson's been one of our steadier defenceman over the past 3 seasons.
If it wasn't for an injured hip last year he'd have been even better |

I think Fraser is the one being over-rated. Play Fraser on the top pairing with Phaneuf, 22 minutes a game against Crosby and see how he does.
He got exposed heavily in the playoffs and probably was next in line to be sat before he went out with an honourable discharge after that bullet to the forehead. |

I highly doubt Dion stays for less than 7.
He sure as hell isn't taking a paycut.

Liles will be the one to go, unfortunately as I'd rather have had him over Gunnarsson. With the top 2 pairing being Phaneuf and potentially Gunnar, the 2nd pairing being Franson and Gardiner, and the 3rd pairing being Fraser and Brennan....I don't see the Leafs keeping Liles on board to play on the 3rd pairing for 3 mil+. |

Things are getting tight.
Gunnarsson's deal is a measuring stick for Franson. He'll get around 4m. 3yr/12m is ok with me.
But at some point Franson's gonna get frustrated with the Leafs. He's been love hate since he got here.
If I'm Nonis, Liles has got to go. Nothing against Liles, but I think the goaltending is going to be good enough that we can start moving young guys up, such as Grannberg and Blacker.
As for Kadri, we'll see. One year at 2.5 should be ok IMO. We get 2m off Armstrong and Tucker after next year(Can't believe Tucker's on the payroll) along with 500k from the Frattin/Scrivens trade, so that can be allocated to Nazem if he comes through. - AngryWhiteMale
not sure you're going to find a taker for Liles. he's 33 with with 3 years left on that deal. IMO he should have been the compliance buyout over Komisarek in Toronto. it looks like the only squeeze though is going to be the squeeze Toronto's putting on Kadri. once they lock up Franson and Fraser, there will only be so much left (say around $3 million). so he can either take that short term or long term. |
