interesting that you say that because he alluded to the fact that the team was not made up of all (any?) Jews - it's been difficult to communicate with him, but that's what I took away anyhow.
- wilsonecho91

huh, what are the qualifying factors to play in the maccabian games?
I thought being jewish was the main one

and of course i'm easy to tease about wanting meszaros to stick around but after last year i think we can't have too many defensemen
- Don'tForgetTocchet

2004 isn't that distant a memory. Of course, Meszaros is suddenly anathema 'round here.

i'm sure Hammarby31 will be able to fill in the details when he gets back, but in case anyone is wondering, the 40+ US men's hockey team has done the following at the Maccabiah games in Israel:

Game 1: lost to Canada 6-5 (he didn't play)
Game 2: lost to Russia 11-6 (he did play and the score was not indicative of quite how badly team USA was outplayed - he played very well, breakaways, odd man rushes, etc. - good enough to earn him the next start)
Game 3: today, beat Israel 5-2 (he played)

They next play Russia again to see who gets to take on the Canadians for the gold. Not sure if he's playing or not.

- wilsonecho91

Cool. I scanned through all the coverage and they didn't mention anything about the current games or any of the results. They were all feature stories.

I'll wait until he's back to complain how the first two losses were Seravalling typical.

More seriously, every time I have tuned in to JLTV to see if there is any hockey on, there has not even been a SPORT on. Just interviews...

it's really difficult to follow. They have a 'live results' page, which worked for the first game and not for the second game. you can see highlights online, but not for the overager group, just the youngins

People need to realize that sh!t happens. The Flyers have faced so much adversity and bad luck in their history. They've always rolled with the punches. I don't even know how many Flyer careers have been cut short from injuries.
- PhillySportsGuy

More than I can probably count, and I've been a fan since the early 70s. Let's see..

Barry Ashbee
Jim Watson
Bob Dailey
Bernie Parent
Joe Watson
Bill Barber
Tim Kerr
Eric Lindros
Keith Primeau
Peter Forsberg
Derian Hatcher

And that's not counting Dmitry Tertyshny who died tragically in a boating accident or Yanick Dupre who passed away due to cancer.

I just hope that Andrei Mezaros doesn't end up being added to the list too.

Sure does seem like Bryzgalov pisses off a lot of people.

I don't know if he's just a flaky guy that rubs people the wrong way, or if he's selfish and just does what he wants without considering others, but Phoenix, Philly and now the Russian team(including his KHL stint) seem to have people not wanting him around at all.

- Jsaquella

Everyone is distancing themselves from him.

Truthfully? I'm excited, too.

I think this team is going to be LETHAL, absolutely LETHAL, on the power play. I think both units are going to be smoking all season.

Again: I'm not dense: I realize that Mark Streit is going to have be shielded at 5v5. I know it. And there are going to be games when he gets exposed defensively. I already know it.

But I think what he and Erik Gustafsson will provide in the transition game, as well as with how much better Steve Mason and Ray Emery are at handling the puck.

I think we're going to score more at even strength. I think we'll be slightly better defensively. And if Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier truly do make tangible, noticeable progress this year, I think by the time the playoffs roll around, this team could be very, very scary.

- AllInForFlyers

I agree. I think with the increased mobility on defense, and a better 5 on 5 transition game, our offense will be back in the top 8 of the league.

Umm... no. I've been plenty critical of Bryzgalov. I have just presented a balanced picture, which most people seem to grasp.
- bmeltzer

Bill, you changed your stance and began to assign some blame to him as it became clear that he was going to be bought out but you defended him pretty strongly through the whole season. In fact, I don't think you ever even agreed that he should be bought when he had to be just because of the length of the contract, the injury clause that would have possibly stopped it had he been brought back and the possible recapture penalty. Either way I wouldn't be congratulating myself on how fair and balanced I was this year after seeing how bad he was in the Pens series because it was pretty evident he was atrocious last year so there was nothing to be fair and balanced about. If you couldn't see he was horrible then I don't know what to tell you.

Opinion time. Who is going to have an up season, down season, stay the same?

Giroux
Hartnell
Voracek
Lecavalier
Simmonds
Schenn
Read
Couturier
Gagne
Talbot
Rinaldo
Hall
Laughton
McGinn
Rosehill
OTHER

Timonen
Streit
Coburn
Meszaros
Schenn
Grossmann
Gustefsson
Gervais
OTHER

Mason
Emery
OTHER

- youarewrong

Giroux - up, I think he will have a year like 11-12
Hartnell -up, better be at least!
Voracek -same
Lecavalier -up, Vinnie will benefit from being surrounded by better talent.
Simmonds- up slightly
Schenn - up
Read - same
Couturier -up
Gagne -down, I really think he is at the end of his career
Talbot - same
Rinaldo-same
Hall-same
Laughton- ?? hard to say coming off only 5 NHL games
McGinn - again, really hard to predict as I think he opens the season in the AHL
Rosehill-same

Timonen-down, sadly this is when Kimmo starts to break down
Streit-same
Coburn-up, much like Hartnell, if it's not up, the Flyers are in trouble
Meszaros-down, just can't see this guy staying healthy
Schenn-up
Grossmann-same, just cross your fingers that he can stay healthy
Gustafsson-up
Gervais-same, which means he still sucks

Mason-up, there is some real potential here and I, for one, think he reaches it.
Emery-down, only because it would basically be impossible to repeat or improve on last season.

Can't believe I forgot Pronger, duh!!
I didn't count Pelle, because, IMO, he died from stupidity, not injury. Also I didn't mention Howe only because between the WHA and NHL he played 20 seasons or so and was nearly 40 when he retired, so I can't really agree that his career was cut short, rather, I would say his effectiveness was reduced instead.
