I would actually like to see the numbers of both goalies down the stretch. The overall team play was much better. The numbers for both guys after the acquisition of Mason.
- PhillySportsGuy

Steve Mason was acquired on April 3. From that date on:
Ilya Bryzgalov: 7 GP, 7 GS, 4-3-0, 2.71 GAA, 0.897 SV%, 0 SO
Steve Mason: 7 GP, 6 GS, 4-2-0, 1.90 GAA, 0.944 SV%, 0 SO

He's burnt a lot of bridges. I think the way he acted about the buyout really bothered people around the NHL. Guys who get bought out are usually embarrassed and upset. Bryz seemed the relish the idea of getting paid for 14 years without having the work.
- PhillySportsGuy

I think it bothered him, but he was just stupid and decided to act like it didnt.

So....it's all Carter's fault. If only he could hit the net.

I feel sorry for how dumb they are. If I hear that one of the Phillies is linked to steroids, I am not going to assume they're innocent because a professional collector "Planted evidence"

No problem. You could say it's all Steve Mason's fault for why we didn't end up with the 7th or 8th pick

I saw mason during a game against the isles...He is quick as poop, if he can control rebounds better he is going to be good/great goalie.

Yeah, they talk about a guy like Vinny maybe taking the BO as a slap in the face and possibly being extra fired up to prove himself... I don't recall anybody saying anything remotely like that about Bryz.

In terms of simple-mindedness, yes.

I don't understand why people always just look for an easy answer. Whenever somethings wrong economically in the world it's Chinas fault. Whenever somethings wrong socially in the world it's America's fault. Whenever somethings wrong with the Flyers it's Bryz and Matt Carles fault.

- PhillySportsGuy

A simple people in need of immediate gratification will be content with simple answers.

This is all your fault.

If Mason didn't play well, who knows what the offseason would have been like. The Flyers would have gone into the offseason assuming they had NO starting caliber goalie. Would they have gone after Emery or a more established goalie? I think they would have been forced to give up significant pieces for Bernier.

Well I'm excited about Mason and Emery. Especially Emery. I like who the Flyers brought in. But I'm not at the point yet where I'm going to state anything as being solved. They still have to improve the overall team play defensively. And they need to get better goaltending. I have high hopes for the current tandem. But still it has to get done on the ice.
- MJL

Agreed. "Solved" may have been overstating it, but I think one of the 2 will, over the course of the season, reveal himself as a longer term solition for us and will be rewarded with a decent extension.

I can understand a little bit for diehard fans of his, the wanting to believe. But for someone not emotionally invested to buy his defense is baffling to me.

I think Bryz is completely indifferent about hockey in general. When being snubbed by the Russian Hockey Federation he probably just shrugged his shoulders and said "Maybe I take the family somewhere over Olympic break"

As far as I'm concerned, I'd like all of the Flyers players to be bumped from Olympic rosters. The risk isn't worth it, imho.

What bothers me the most is that he went after the collector's integrity and got the man fired. He gave a press conference in front of everyone and said he was wrongfully accused.

Then he releases a short paragraph through MLB and vanishes like a fart in the wind. Such a coward. Stand up like a man and answer questions. Apologize to everyone and admit you're a coward.

I would like to see that happen to Mez, Streit and Timonen. The olympics would be invaluable experience for guys like Lauridson and Noebels.

I was being sarcastic about how people were so mad we were winning at the end. I'm extremely happy with how things played out. Mason showed what everyone saw early in his career and received a prove yourself 1 year extension. Flyers add a great addition in goal in Emery to compete with Mason. I'm very happy with where our goalie situation is at this very moment.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Bryz just retire, take his money, and call it a career.

Forget about the limits of his on-ice performance, he just never struck me as one of those guys who's both in love with the game and obsessed with the craft of his profession. He's not Marty Biron w/ his sewing kit, Cechmanek doing anything humanly possible to stop the puck, Ray Emery who is just grateful for his health and happy to still be living his dream.

Bryz has always done only as much as he has to, and isn't known to go the extra mile. He admittedly doesn't deign to study shooter tendencies, isn't famous for being the first and last guy on/off the ice, and seems to spend more energy trying to impress people with anecdotes or wallowing in the drama of his own self-importance than spending the majority of his waking hours worrying about getting better at stopping the puck.

Is it any wonder that he fell apart in a demanding market, against a backdrop of mile-high expectations?

- Tomahawk

I agree with this.

I mean, seriously. Again, I do think the media did a hatchet job on Bryzgalov this last season, took the time to make sure that anything and everything they could say that was negative got said to anybody and everybody.

But at the same time...I absolutely agree that he didn't love the game. I absolutely agree with that. To me, it was fairly obvious that he didn't view one game, one week, one season, as life or death.

Should he be right about that? Sure. We shouldn't take it this seriously.

But we do. That's the reality. Philadelphia isn't Anaheim or Phoenix. I'm as patient with the Flyers organization as anybody, and more than most.

But I'm not trying to see or hear somebody who doesn't feel the anguish of the fans of this team who have been waiting far too long for a Cup.

I can forgive any player who tries their best for the Flyers and comes up short. I have done so and will continue to do so.

But I do ask that they give a damn, as much as some of us who have waited patiently for a really long time for all the breaks to go our way.

Didn't even realize. We've had this argument in here so many times about winning when 'It doesn't matter.' There were several great things that came out of the end of the year run. Gus emergence as a top 6 dman, Mason emergence as a bonified option to be a starter and Lauridson emergence as a depth defenseman if needed. Are Lindholm or Nicushkin going to be that much better than Morin? It's impossible to tell at this point, so the argument is best saved for another time.
