Franson worries me a bit. Especially since he declined to go to arbitration. What could he possibly be asking for. We gotta give him some term, he's one year from UFA. Gardiner-Franson is a nice 2nd pairing - t_leafs21
He's probably asking north of 3 million. He's an interesting case for sure. |

he will prolly sign 2 for 6 or 3 for 10.. inflated the yearly price for a 3rd year by a third - Dozzer
You think he accepts this? If that's what the Leafs are offering, I'm thinking the agent will push for a one yr deal. |

I agree. If he plays anything like last year a crazy Arb will likely give him 12 million for 2 years.

They blew it with Subban though. Could of had him on a 6 year deal for 4.5-5m per. Now, he's waiving his Norris in their faces asking for 7 |

Soooo you want your No. 1 Centre sitting so you can get taken to the cleaners in a year?
I'm sure if you asked Montreal there are a lot of people kicking themselves for not locking up PK for 6 or 7 years and around 4 million cap number. |

I keep forgetting that the arbitraters don't set the number anymore.
Player asks for this, explains why he deserves it.
Club asks for this, explains why he deserves that and not what he's asking.
Arbitrater announces the winner is....Bam! There is no middle number. |

I think it was actually more like 4.5, but like you said he will be cashing in next year. |

Yah and if Cammi got 6 million for an Arb for one good year, Kadri will be up around there if he has two good years backing him. |

Subban has not proven anything and does not deserve 7 million at this point.
If that what he wants after a good (not great) 42 games, then bye. |

So you want to give up a Norris winner when you only have one D signed after next year? Hmmmm...not sure that's the best plan but okay. |

Didn't say I wanted him gone. I said he doesn't deserve 7 million.
He hasn't proven that he deserves to be mentionned among the elite defensemen which is why Bergevin hasn't even spoken to his agent about an extension. |

the thing about the Duchene deal is, yes they saved money for two years, but that very likely cost them in the long run.
If they say locked up Duchene for around 4.5 per for 5-6 years they would be laughing right now and I would imagine Duchene would have signed it.
Same with Montreal, they could have had Subban for around 4.5 for 5-6 years and i is very likely they will be paying him 7 per after next season.
Why shouldn't the Leafs go 4.5 mil per for 5 years if you believe he is a building block for this team? - IanEsplen
you pay a premium for knowing what you're getting. that's the situation Montreal is in with Subban. they'll have to sign him for $7 million (provided his play doesn't slip) but they'll do so knowing that they're paying for a guy with a proven track record. whereas if you give Kadri his long-term deal now, you might save yourself 1-2 million per year down the road on his cap hit (your actual dollar savings won't be as significant because you'll be paying more over the first 2 years of the long-term deal), but you're making that commitment to a player who hasn't proven himself over an 82-game season, which is dangerous. so in terms of risk/reward... what's the better call? i guess everyone has a different opinion. |

Does that make up for the one were giving up for Bernier? lol - t_leafs21
I'd say he's more like a free 212th pick. No one wants him. Reclamation project |

ask admonton fans how they feel about locking guys up long term
there is a flip side to that coin
and if i am nonis i say one thing: "as soon as randy started playing you in the top two lines and off the 3rd pairing matchups you got 3 points in the entire month of april. so no.. we do not believe you are worth what you are asking for yet" |
