Mike Sullivan seems to be Torts' boy. Was Asst Coach under him in TB and NYR. No idea what he was in charge of.

Glen Gullutzen was the head coach of Dallas for a season or 2 until getting the axe in May. Other posters here seemed to be happy with this choice.

Saw him play a 2011 pre-season game against San Jose. He dominated that game and looked like one of the top 3 players on the ice. I don't think the few shifts he played with the Canucks last year are representative of his abilities.

He looked like so many other prospects who've come up over the last few years. It's almost as if Vigneault tells every rookie "We'll allow you to play a few shifts as long as you don't do anything. If you take any risks or make any noticeable plays, you're sitting."

AV wanted everyone to follow the Alex Burrows/Ryan Kesler path. You have to establish yourself as a third or fourth line drone checker before you're allowed to demonstrate any offensive instincts or talent. Look at how Schroeder was used this past season as another prime example. Undersized forward selected for his offensive talent is playing on the fourth line with tacking dummies while Lapierre and a winger with no experience as a center play ahead of him. Any wonder these guys lose their confidence and fail to meet expectations?

Going back to Pavel Bure and Trevor Linden, what other top 6 type forwards other than the Sedins have been allowed to establish themselves as offensive stars on the club's roster?

- YeOldTimer

Yeah, that pre-season really raised his stock in many Canucks fans eyes, and I even remember AV being quite impressed, although I think his comments were blown out of proportion....mainly because he rarely praised prospects.

Agreed about the style AV wants his younger guys to play.

It's not a bad thing to preach good two-way play, and prospects and young players should always try to improve at both ends, but some prospects are never going to be great two way players.

They can still be valuable assets to the team if they're put in a position to use their strengths, and AV never seemed to realize this, or adapt his system to utilize the skills these players/prospects could bring—Hodgson and Grabner being prime examples, even Kassian to a degree.

Hopefully the new staff will be different and guys like Jensen can contribute without worrying that they'll be benched or demoted if they make a single mistake in the defensive end.

How could I forget—I've adopted it as a personal motto.

I should add, 1 minute in heaven is better than 30 seconds.

Ask my wife...

Ovechkin is a prime case in point. He seemed to decline in every way when they tried to make him a "responsible" two way player. The guy is an offensive animal. Leave it at that.

May still be some tickets available - but there is a chance the tour could be coming to Canada at some point. When it was announced, they indicated that the tour was in the US and Canada. They've added two more dates this week so who knows? I didn't want to take a chance so the wife and I are headed down to Chicago. Better than going to Detroit.

That is going to be absolutely awesome. Enjoy

Wish they were coming a bit closer to BC.

How did I miss that? I'm going this year anyway...
- AlexF

Yeah, I wasn't able to go either.

Chose the Squamish festival this year over Sasquatch.

I'm a huge Queens of the Stone Age fan

But Sasquatch looked like a pretty awesome lineup, as well.

Yeah. Good example.

There's a point where you have to realize forcing the issue when a guy simply isn't going to be a great two way player is just going to waste the talent that a player might have in the offensive zone.

That being said, you want the effort to be there even if the defensive ability isn't.

That should be a great show. The wife and I were debating going to Sasquatch but it was bad timing. Seeing the Queens in TO in September. Never seen them live - only Them Crooked Vultures which was a great show too. Band of Horses is playing in Squishy - they're pretty good as well. I saw them last year in NYC for the global festival.

Didn't see that Mercer report. Thinking that if some of those steps were done incorrectly, how many lives would be on the line? Pretty sure getting someone's order incorrect at Tim's wouldn't be a life and death situation. Like I said, it's criminal.

Wasn't that when some opposition plug said, 'they don't play the right way, they won't win in the playoffs'? And they got eaten alive. OV is a great player, but his back checking has made Todd Bertuzzi look like a Selke candidate. Effort needs to be there for the whole length of the ice.

Sasquatch was great this year. I played so much bouche cup it's a wonder I made it to any of the bands. Squamish can never really compare in terms of scope but it does have a few of the same bands (Vampire Weekend, Macklemore & Lewis).

Absolutely. I've been in the industry for 14 years myself in varying positions. Used to be a pilot before I got sick and lost my medical. While it may not seem like it to some, it's never been cheaper to fly.
- Canuckleafer

Flew to Florida with the wife and kid for $781 return. Couldn't believe how cheap it was.

I've never seen QOSA or TCV (Zeppelin is my favourite all time, so I love that JPJ is in the group).

Almost went to Vegas to see QOTC last year but plans fell through.

Big fan of Eagles of Death Metal as well....basically anything Josh Homme does is awesome.

My wife is a big Band of Horses fan, so she's excited too. I like them as well, but wouldn't go to the festival just for them.

Nope. You could probably walk up to the ticket window and get those prices. I don't want to sound like a troll but introducing a snow sport in Florida was always going to be a bad idea. Heck, they had a soccer team there once that tanked. And they've got a ton of soccer fans in that city. Relocation (or a Bettman takeover) is only a matter of time.
- AlexF

I checked out prices when I was there last winter. Sunrise is pretty cheap, not so much in Tampa. Of course, they're both a bargain compared to Vancouver.

Yeah, a co-worker went to Sasquatch and said it was incredible.

We're just going to Squamish for August 10th, so I think we'll miss Vampire Weekend. Can't remember which day Macklemore is on...

I think we in Canada are way too obsessed with the "effort" quotient. I often get the impression that we'd rather have someone giving it their all and producing nothing over someone who measures their effort expenditure and produces far more. If Ovi is clocking a PPG pace consistently, he can do pretty much anything he wants IMO. The moment he declines, I'm all up his a$$.

I still want to see young players make an effort to improve the areas they need work in, whether it's the offensive or defensive end.

But their skills and talents in other areas shouldn't be wasted by being benched and demoted simply because they can't become elite or even great two way players.

Canucks need offense—I for one am willing to accept a few defensive gaffs if a younger player can contribute a few goals and excitement.
