no, they really are not.
you probably trade 1 of Bolland or Kulemin and replace with a Marlie promotion. McClement gets a raise but not a crazy one.
with all the outdoor games the cap will likely be back north of $70M next summer. - Big_Lightnin

Okay, so after reading all this Phaneuf trade stuff I started to think about what we would possibly want from New Jersey or Edmonton. Any ideas? |

we would want things they are not willing to give up.
But K-Lowe is a big Dion fan. If he has any influence, it could happen.

So what was the point of getting Bolland? Kulemin is a very important cog, guys like these are rare thats why they traded for bolland, there aren't a whole lot in the system that can play that well and that style. Losing those two is a big setback. I'm saying the are screwed if they want o improve and win the cup in the next few years, not whether they can ice a team. |

At the end of this season, they will have to spend upwards of 15-16 million to keep bith Phil and Phaneuf. Can't happen unless others are gone. There isn't enough space unless the cap goes way up. They have zero cap space, thats why they haven't signed some of their key people as it is. - aminnes
They're not adding 15-16 mil in cap space. If dion jumps to 7mil, we add 500k totally managable. They'd not screwed. |

Liles Buyout if done next summer:
◦2014-15: $791,667
◦2015-16: $2,291,667
◦2016-17: $1,166,667
◦2017-18: $1,166,667
saves then $3M in year 1, $1.5M in year 2, and $2.5M yr 3 and 4.
or they trade him for a couple expiring contracts and buy them out instead.

Phil adds 3 plus million right there. Again, they can ice the same level of a team, but the point was to become a champ not stay the same. |

I think they'd need a defenceman back, my point is that they are terrible trading partners. Most people will be. We have a good forward group and we need help on the back end. |

and Im saying losing 1 of Bolland or Kulemin isn't going to cripple the team. especially with players like Biggs, McKegg, or possibly Ashton a year closer.
Colbornes there as well.
I know you like to be the Sky is Falling guy, but they are fine.
and I personally think both Dion and Kessel will sign for less than what Jimmy Nobody in the article thinks they will.

Agreed, but there isn't anyone. Dion would be missed to a degree, but platooning the minutes and the fact that his big asset - offense - is very prominent in the depth of the club should keep it within reason. If they can't bring back all the young up and coming d men going to court for their contracts would it even matter? |

I didn't say cripple. It would be a big negative though. keeping them is going to be 15 plus million. If the cap goes up, even more. When have the LEafs ever got a hometown discount? |

so North of $8.5M. don't think so. but again, $2.5M coming off the books, so 500k.
Dion, if we want to say he gets $7M. another $500k.
$6M cap increase is probably conservative given the number of outdoor games.
so Bolland can maybe get at same money. Kuli and McClement $1M raise each.
Gardiner and Reimer might be an issue, but I doubt they keep both Reimer and Bernier for more than 1 yr.
so they remove Liles in whatever way they can. .

Phil's current salary is 5.4 million. Add Armstrongs 1.0 million and Tucker's 1.0 million plus 500k from the retained salaries of Scrivens and Frattin. That's 7.9 million, so of the increase in the salary cap (roughly 5-7 million) Phil will only obsorb roughly 500-600k. |

just got one with Clarkson.
Sundin gave them several.
could argue Reimer did too.
If they both want to stay, and help the team improve, they will sign for reasonable money.
if they offered phaneuf 6 yrs at his current salary, he would be a fool to turn it down. He wont get that anywhere else.
Kessel anything under $8M is leaving money on the table, and I don't think that's unreasonable. |

Free agency inflates player salaries. What Phaneuf signs as an RFA or an extension is much lower than what he would garner on the open market. Gonchar got $5.0 million |

He did sign a two year deal, the second year has an opt out clause which he has stated that he would like to return to the NHL. |

McClement is a very valuable player for a bottom six forward, I really hope they resign him to a multiyear deal. - Zezel
I may get a McClemment jersey if they lock him up long term. |

From NJ would want to be honest almost nothing. Henrique maybe, don't really have picks. Don't really like their prospect pool too much.
From the oilers a young defenceman + picks.
Would just rather keep him though. And not sure NJ would even be willing to deal Henrique. |
