apparently bolland wasn't happy about being traded here. a guy i work with lives across from his grandma and she said he wanted to go play for a california team, where no one would know who he is. hopefully he has a good season here and this changes cause it would have sucked to trade those picks and he walks after a year
- matt1337

Well in public at least he's saying all the right things about how he grew up as a Leafs fan and it's a dream come true to play in the Blue and White

i would be happy with trading phaneuf for a mid 1st and solid defensive prospect, someone like brodin, klefbom or dumba (would love trouba but doubt winnipeg moves him)
- matt1337

I don't know...unless you have someone already on the team that can take Phaneuf's place immediately, this method will get you back in the basement faster than you can say Harold Ballard.

You're looking to weaken the team for years?

People talk about tradi g phanuef like he's a 36 year old pending UFA. Mind bogging.

i'm not saying right now at this very moment do the trade. should have specified. keep phaneuf till the deadline. if he doesn't want to take a pay cut to stay here, not to mention if gardiner or others step up and prove they can play top 4 minutes, then deal him for a similar package i mentioned. if he will take a pay cut, i am more then open to keeping him

hopefully he means it. its good that we are finally bringing in home town kids though. they can obviously tell their friends what an amazing experience it is here and how crazy the atmosphere is and hopefully allow us to sign other good ontario kids

You can mention stuff about Phaneuf like him having more points per game in the last three years than Doughty and Suter, playing against the top players in all situations with very inexperienced partners on a weak team, etc, etc, all of his positive stats being comparable to top Dmen, and people will still say I don't go off stats I watch the games and I wouldn't take him for free...it really is funny

Yes, this makes a lot more sense. In reality, whether people are fans of Phaneuf or not, defensemen like him are about as rare as Pope poop in the league.

Yeah, I dig that we have a bunch of local Toronto and Ontario players and picks now, I do believe it means something to a player to play for their fandom team

somewhere in the range of what keith got (he's getting 5.5 until 2023), say give phaneuf 7 years at 5.25 and i would keep him.

not only that, they have their friends and family watching them for 41 games a year. obviously they would have to want to work harder. teams with ontario players come in and have good games against us cause these ontario kids want to impress their friends and family

lol yeah even if a player kind of would like to be away from the media glare, if he's got all his buddies and family with blue face paint cheering him on that's a good motivator

i volunteer at an elementary school, coached their ice hockey team. the goalie plays for the mississauga terriers but most likely will be playing AAA next year. was talking with the kid, he said, if he ever makes the NHL he would play for 2 mil a season regardless of if he's the best goalie in the NHL. will be interesting to see what happens with him. still he is OHL draft eligible and he was pretty solid. his improvement from last year to this year was crazy.

I hope he's the best goalie in the NHL and plays for the Leafs for two mil a year, that would be okay with me.

I often wondered if a player said I don't care about leaving money on the table, I want to take a big discount to win a Cup with a team if the PA would say no, we all have to work together to keep salaries pushing upwards

Keep Kessel. Trade Phaneuf to Colarado for Statsny.
- dstewart

Oh FFS, we still talking about that?

Trade Dion for a serviceable Dman and a young speedy forward to make up for Frattin's loss.

I wouldn't mind Smid and Hemsky for Dion but I'd want a conditional 1st if Dion resigns with EDM and Hemsky doesn't resign with us.

if it takes 8 over 8 to sign Kessel, Leafs have to do it. it's a bit much given how one-dimensional Kessel is, but he's still one of the most productive, electric players in the game and the Leafs gave up an absolute ransom to get him, despite what fans in here have said about Seguin and Hamilton. losing this guy would be a disaster.

as for Phaneuf... 7? yikes. i know the popular refrain here is "who replaces him?" but frankly, that's the GMs job. do you really want to have a GM who signs a player to an inflated contract because he doesn't think he can acquire another decent defenceman? the direction Nonis takes with Phaneuf will be interesting.

That's what happens when you wait until the last possible minute... you end up hand-cuffing yourself.
