We don't know yet. Guys like Fraser, Franson, Gardner, are all young and getting better. We won't know how good they can be for at least 2-3 years. Dion is done. He is what he is and took a sharp decline post lockout particularly due to the rule changes in his end, I'de rather keep all those guys and watch them get better and possibly better than him, then pay him and be forced to move one or more or them down the line. Basically it's either have faith in Dion or take a fairly calculated risk that the guys guys they have will become good down the line. I would venture to say that keeping him, knowing what he is means there won't be enough dpeth to pull off a championship while he's here. - aminnes

He used the old Mccabe argument and inserted it with Dion. Phaneuf's rookie season was the year after the lockout. |

The salary cap will be 70 minimum that year, so we can still retain the players we currently have. |

Letang's contract actually helps - Dion's not a Norris candidate, hasn't been for quite a while, so he "shouldn't" command that level of salary. 1 level below, ie $6M per.

Leafs fans have been fed the same vague talking points for so long that they've all just kind of blended into one "catch all" argument.
So-and-so is overpaid... so-and-so couldn't handle the new rule changes... so-and-so has issues behind the scenes... so-and-so is too one-dimensional and you can't win with him...
It works for anyone, depending on what the media's mood is today. |

It really does work. It lowers the value of all our players. Hell, the perceived value of Bernier has already nose-dived. And I saw nothing but rim-jobs for him for the past 3 years from media and fans. |

Pretty much. These numbers are probably a little on the high side, too.
I can't see Gardiner jumping up to $4M on his first RFA contract. And I'd be willing to bet one of Bernier or Reimer gets moved. I really hope Reimer plays out of his mind and solidifies his hold on the starter's job.

1- you assume 70M, why not 69M or 68M?
2- you're missing 3 players, so +/- 2,1M |

So, are you suggesting that it is impossible to find a partner for a guy with Phaneuf's cap hit?
Because the numbers say otherwise. Just off the top of my head, I can think of Boston and Chara. - Leeman4Gilmour
One team. It's very difficult top imagine this situation being readily available. |

What I need you to do is come up with a list of contenders... forget cap, just think about contenders. Now revisit your "no contenders has more than one player over 6M" argument.
Let's see how that turns out.
Go on, give it a try. - gravyface
Semantics. Okay, the Leafs can win the cup with Dion making 7 and playing 30 ins a game. Your right. |

Detroit with Lidstrom.
L.A. with Doughty.
Ottawa with Karlsson.
Minny with Suter.
San Jose with Boyle.
None of these teams were ever prevented from finding decent partners to play on the top unit. A top defenseman at Phaneuf's price tag has never caused any team to suffer. |

Not really. Even at 68, you move a guy like Bolland or Kulemin. Done.
Keep in mind that those projections were pretty generous. |
