Anyone else really think the new alignment sucks? Out of boredom I'm going to offer a fix. This is assuming 2 franchises are added in Seattle and Quebec City.

The premise of this plan is 4 conferences of 8 teams, with two 4 team divisions in each conference. I will post in multiple messages so it doesn't get too long. It would look like this:

The Conferences would be paired geographically for scheduling/playoffs so that A and B played more often and C and D played more often. The season would be increased from 82 to 84 games. The schedule would then look as follows:

4 games each against teams in conference = 28 games
3 games each against teams in paired conference = 24 games
2 games each against remaining teams = 32 games

The playoffs would work as follows:

The winner of each division automatically qualifies and the 4 division winners from each conference pair are seeded based on point totals and seeded 1-4. The remaining playoff seeds are determined by number of points and can be comprised of any number of teams from a division. They will be seeded 5-8. Reseeding takes place after the first round of playoffs.

Using the Sabres as an example:

Sabres play 4 games each against:
Toronto, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, Boston

Sabres play 3 games each against:
NY Rangers, NY Islanders, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina, Tampa Bay, Florida

Sabres play 2 games each against:
Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Jose, Anaheim, Arizona, Winnipeg, Detroit, Chicago, Minnesota, Colorado, Dallas, Nashville, St. Louis

In order for this to actually happen you might need to swap Detroit and Columbus, because otherwise you essentially put Detroit back in the "Western Conference". I don't think the Wings will go for that. I prefer Detroit and Chicago in the same division, but Detroit with Toronto isn't bad either.

Pierce, while I admire your creativity, I hate the small divisions. Can a team hang a banner for beating out 3 other teams? Just like when the NFL went to small divisions, if you have one dominant team like New England, they basically win every year by default. I think they've won 8 out of 11?
