The organization has done a fine job of keeping everyone in the dark.

I can't imagine the money is worth discussing, and certainly not worth worrying about.

Slow news day Eli? I guess we all need to fret about something during the dog days...

It's more the principle of the matter. Even Kruger's cap hit took longer than normal to come out.

This is my slow season at work. There's always work to do but it's not the same as our busy season.

Taking a quick look at a 2014/15 roster against the cap:

Hawks can field same group of forwards for same money as today +$1m for Shaw. With Shaw at $1.5m, and Saad still at $900k, you need 4 more forwards all at $800k to $1m. Pick from Smith, Bollig, Denault, Hayes, Morin, Pirri. That works.

On D, we likely need $1.5m more to field our current top 6 plus a Stanton or Clendening as 7th. Hammer at $5.3m is up $1.8m. But replace Brookbank w Stanton or Clendening and you save about $300k.

Then say Craw at $4.5m. That's $2m more than today. And maybe a Rantti replacing Khabby would save $500k.

So, roster currently stands at about $63m (including Smith as 22nd player). Add $4.5m per above. Cap needs to be $67.5m for us to get everything we want....about $3m, or 5% increase.

Who knows how this all shakes out, but feels comfortable to me.

But by the next year, we have Kaner and Toews to take care of. 15/16 is when we will need our pipeline to really step up. We better have Clendening/Stanton replacing Oduya/Rozy, and someone replacing a Bickell or Sharp.

There's so much "if" involved here I don't even know where to start picking it apart.

Slow news day, and apologies if this has been posted before (although I don't think it has). Stumbled across this nice (non-hockey related) story about Bryan Bickell.

Tool.

I have to use a smart phone to access Hockey Buzz. Apparently, my place of employment wants to me accomplish something during work hours.

Your job must suck then. How can you tolerate a place of employment that does not permit you to spend half your day on Hockeybuzz?

Well my prior place of employment allowed employees access to sports websites, and they are known for their sound decisions.

An opportunity to meet Corey Crawford and have personal items signed by him, or purchase items signed by him July 28 at the Lake Barrington Field House. Portion of proceeds to benefit a child with cancer.

Got this on my Facebook page the other day, thought I'd pass this along for non-haters

Sidelinemarketingltd.com for details.

Al...I wouldn't be surprised if a large number of Hockeybuzz commenters consider Holtby superior to Crawford.
- ArlingtonRob

Too funny!

And I just got accused of making personal attacks for doing nothing more than defending the Stanley Cup Winning/Jennings Trophy Winning Goalie while responding to no one in particular.

While the guy who accused me just laid a string of like six personal attacks on some poor guy for no reason other than that he disagreed with him that would make a 12 year old girl proud.

It's a madhouse, I tell you! A madhouse!

And another thing, where did this myth start that Detroit doesn't pay for goalies? Look at Howard's contract. Hasek? Joseph? They forked over some cash there.

Raanta style ---Not a butterfly, eh?
- Beaver-Warrior

No butterfly....
Glenn Hall created the butterfly and I saw many a a home game he played in.

The classic butterfly goalies didn't go forward after pucks in play out front.

It is more Hasek like, with some stand-up, but what sets it apart is that he is rubbery and willing to basically throw caution to the wind to break things up.

I am willing to bet they try and reel him in...

John over the last two decades teams like San Jose na dothers found these "foreign goalies as a way to replenish restock and trade their Euro backstopers...

I don't htink this is a handwritting on the wall move...do they really know that this Finnish goaler CAN be an NHL stopper? I don't think they know that...just that if they can JUST pay money to find out, it is nice try & no assets are relinquished.

If the teams success and noteriety gets UFA Euros to come here, they are playing a flawless hand of cards...

I am sure they want to keep Crow's pay reasonable, but IF they REALLY were panicked by his results, they could have offered a whole lot more than the Leafs did and had Bernier show his upside (or not) THIS YEAR....even after signing Raanta as future...

EITHER wouldn't be fully ready or capable to take a starters role as Crawfords deal ends, but Bernier HERE would signal they want change NOW....

I can think of many Euro goalies who make that signing and cannot become that guy...just what makes you think THIS Euro goaltender is the exception?

The idea is to strengthen the long term team and every LeBlanc and Raanta just shows you are constantly looking and evaluating, because the CAP forces you to....
