In the 90's Roy, Hasek and Brodeur were the stand alone best. You might be able to put Belfour in there because he's a Hall of Famer and had the most shutouts during the 90's but there was something special about the first three tenders mentioned. Who are the stand alone three best today on a consistent and regular basis?

I think i would go Hasek, , Roy and Brodeur.

Hasek carried teams that had no right getting anywhere.

Read my post a few pages back that compared the average goals for in 1981 to the average goals for in 2011. It concluded that a goal in this era is worth just a hair over 1.4 goals in that era. From there I take Bossy's 68 goals, and divide it by 1.4. It's pretty simple math, actually.

As great a player Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Mark Messier and Brett Hull all were, I think it's safe to say you could shave off some of their points if they played in this Era. Not a lot of points but some. It seems today that everyone is an animal. Players are bigger and fitness is extremely important. Right now players are unlikely to go out for a beer, burgers and fries right after a game. Of course I can't confirm or deny this but I would say if players take this career seriously, it's a pretty safe bet.

I think maybe what would need to be done is take the average goals scored by a team per game over the last 40 years to get a baseline. Rather than using the 2011 number.
- Just5

Ok, I'll use the Flyers, as they've been around for just over 50 years, and are constantly competitors, so there will be less spikes from year to year due to poor performance. All time, including postseason, the Flyers have 13,169 goals in 3,968 games. That's an all time average of 3.318800403225806 goals per game. In 1980, the Islanders averaged 4.4375 goals per game. This means to get to our baseline we can get Bossy's prorated goals that year by dividing 3.3 by 4.4, and multiplying his total by 0.747898682417083. So our prorated Bossy season has him scoring 50.85711040436165 goals when compared to the all time Flyers stats. Not too far off from my equation before, which had him scoring about 49. Now, the 2011-2012 Lightning. They averaged 2.865853658536585 goals per game, which means we can prorate Stamkos's season by dividing 3.3 by 2.8, and multiplying his goal total by 1.158049502402196. So on our baseline Stamkos scores 69.48297014413178 goals.

On the baseline -

Bossy - 51 goals
Stamkos - 69 goals

That didn't work quite like I expected it to. Would it work better to get the league average of GF/G for each season?

EDIT: Nope, that's actually fine. Bossy was on a high scoring team in a high scoring era, and his goals were adjusted because of that. Stamkos was on a lower scoring team of a lower-scoring era, and his goals reflect that. This is a good baseline.

I can agree Hasek alone made Buff a threat, even if the rest of the team was sub-par.

(frank) the sabermetrics. We know it's a different game now....most people accept the fact that guys like Gretzky and Lemieux wouldn't put up the same numbers.

That being said, it's a silly debate to have. If you shave pts off Gretzky's numbers, what are we looking at? 198 pts instead of 215? 85 goals instead of 93?

See what I'm getting at?

so many factors watered down league, more trapping teams, bigger goaltending equipment, salary cap, (imagine the 92 Penguins under a salary cap).

also a different era in regard to most players knew taking a run at him & seriously hurting him meant less $$$ for everyone involved, the League generated next to nothing compared to before the lockout missed season & now.

everyone labeled it as "oh careful he plays with Semenko" in all reality all teams had guys of Semenko's ilk.

Yes, we would
He'd still be a tier above everyone else in the league, but 180+ points is unrealistic for the game today. Crosby has been the closest comparable to Lemieux and Gretzky since them, and he's only managed 120 in today's game.

Crosby doesn't have the vision that 99 had.

Gretzky was the most talented player in the league by far, but he scored 200 pts because he played the game 3 steps ahead of everyone on top of that skill.

That kind of hockey sense is timeless, shall we say. I don't think he'd drop off that much in production.

id never argue crosbys vision was better than 99s, but i dont think he would be dropping off a 200 point season in todays game.

I wouldn't try to argue that he does have the same vision, but if you ranked forwards over the past 30 years by their vision and hockey sense, then Crosby would make a strong argument for 3rd. That being said, on modern, cap era teams that can't be stacked up with multiple HHOF players at once (In Gretzky's 215 season the Oils had Gretzky, Coffey, Kurri, Anderson, and Messier), a 200 point season just isn't possible. I'd like to say a 140 point season isn't possible but I do think Gretzky or Lemieux might be able to pull it off if they were in the league today in their primes.

And in some weird way I'd like to see him do it. It'd help get rid of this feeling people seem to have that Wayne Gretzky was blessed by some sort of mythical hockey dragon that only comes out once every 50 years to give 1 player the skills of a god in order to have his way with the hockey world
Like Gretzky was awesome, and possibly the best to ever play, but I think the lore that surrounds him has sort of transcended his actual game. He was a human being, and there will be another human being (if there is not one already) very soon that will have the skills that he did. His circumstance also helped him ALOT, as that 84-85 Oilers team was just stupidly stacked.
