Who's gonna be captain of the Sabres next season? I don't see them giving it to Vanek with all the trade rumors.

Leadership is overrated.

I remember the Leafs did that after Mats left. I was thinking this year no captain and by the season after next Hodgeson may get it
- steve362

I just don't wanna see someone get it just for tha sake of having one... I want whoever it is to earn being "captain"
Possibly Hodgson
Foligno has been a guy ppl think could be "Captain" material
Myers has stated his desire to become a leader, but he needs to rebound from a tough season last year if he wants to wear a letter
If Mike Weber was more skilled, then maybe... But I think he's an "A" type of guy at best

This team hasn't had a guy worthy of wearing the "C" since July 1st 2007.

Didn't campbell wear the C before he was dealt in 08? I think he was worthy...or maybe the best of a bad bunch?

How about this : Miller, Stafford, pysyk and a second for eberle... We take some salary if we have to

Then Vanek for statsny and a second... There we go, the rebuild begins.

You know, you could have just said "rotating captains"....instead of listing a bunch of captains before I was even born and completely humiliating me

Doesn't really make them that much better, not saying it's a bad deal or horribly one sided just that it doesn't make sense for them. They could probably get better quality for Eberle than the quantity in that deal.

And that second deal is just no bueno. Vanek for one year of stastny and a second

Very true, but I like the potential leadership in some of our prospects. I think our terrible run in the leadership department will come to an end fairly soon.

How does trading Vanek for a guy the same age who is also UFA after this year help the "rebuild"?

Those rinks are going to be busy all the time . Canisus , is moving there , Buffalo junior Sabres . The whole Buffalo Regals minor league travel teams have been bought by the Sabres and will be moved there . They will also be hosting lots of tourneys plus lots more in the pipeline.

That basically means nothing in regards to the success of the hotel. There will not be enough events to keep that place full.

Not to be a stickler, but Statsny is almost 2 full years younger than Vanek.

That sounds about right. I think Statsny is December '85 and Vanek January '84.

Anyone think maybe giving Gilbert Brule a shot might be a low risk high reward scenario? Kid is only 26 and was a top-10 pick in the draft.

Really?
Someone said they were the same age the other day n I just took him at his word. I thought that wasn't right, but I don't really pay attn to the AVs
My bad
I don't wanna trade for a guy that'll be able to walk after the year though, that doesn't make sense for us
We need young guys that will at least still be an RFA at the end of their current deals

We could use the C depth. Would allow us to play Ennis at the wing or trade Hodgson if the kid isn't willing to agree on a new contract.

Can't force the kid to sign a deal that is good for the team. I definitely don't give him over $4 million. They have to bridge contract him or end up with a Tyler Myers situation.

True,
But what do u think he gets for a 6-7year deal
I'm ok with giving him 5mil per in that case
I'm not as worried as I was w Myers bc w Hodgson u see the dedication he has in the offseason working out with Roberts
And the kid has talent
Plus, I was really impressed while he was still able to be productive when Vanek got hurt & then after we traded Pommer
He might not be the "superstar #1" a lot of ppl think we need...
But I think he'll be a ppg player
And I expect that his defense will improve as he works on it in the offseasons & continues to grow as a player

No way do I think he is a PPG player or I'd give him $5 million all day long. I think he has a 70 point plateau.

Ok,
Lets say he's a 30-40-70pt guy
U wouldn't give a guy 5mil per over 6years for that production?
I would

I love the way our defense is shaping up for the future
But I'm not so sure our forwards are as bad as ppl make them out to be
Projecting a future lineup, we'd look like this:

Girgensons-Grigorenko-Armia... All 1st rounders, very high ceilings

Ennis-Hodgson-Foligno... Two 1st rounders & a guy ppl think could be captain

Catenacci-Larsson-Tropp... All have grit and scoring ability, could be a fantastic "checking unit"

-and I forgot Flynn, so pencil him into a slot if one of the above doesn't work out

I don't hate that top9 at all if they live up to their potential

-guys like Jacobs, Kea, Schaller & Nelson should be serviceable 4th liners, at minimum

-Bailey, Compher, Hurley & Baptiste are all top9 quality guys too

I think we are looking pretty good

If we can add Reinhart or Nystrom in the next draft we look even better
And in any deal for Miller or Vanek, my starting point is a 2015 1st...
That way we have extra ammo to trade up for McDavid (if need be)

We add 2 of those 3 and I LOVE how our forward group looks
And all these guys will be within 5-6yrs of each other,
So it's a group that could be mostly kept together for a long time

The more I look at it,
The more I actually like the direction we are headed
I actually like it a lot
