Calgary at 30?
Calgary is a great city. I know the team is kind of half azz right now, but I'd play here over at least 8-10 NHL cities. - IanEsplen
Has to be based almost entirely on their competitiveness right now. I'd say they have a pretty good chance at finishing last next year.
Plus Feaster is an idiot. And Hartley is a d!ck. |

wow, slow day...guess I should have posted my grocery list - IanEsplen
UFA's still available that could be a good fit for the Canucks:
Most of these guys are longshots or too expensive but what the hell. These are mostly guys that could upgrade our 4th line or bottom paring/7 D Man. There are a couple that could potentially contribute in the top 6. Like Ian said its a slow day.

Just noticed that. Good pick up, at a good cap hit of $650K.
Too bad MG is too busy buttering up Luongo in FLA right now. I know that the Canucks brass is hoping that some of our prospects can fill out the rest of the bottom 9, but there are still some proven cheaper veterans out there that can step right in and do it now. My guess would be that we don't see anymore FA signings on the Canucks until we get Tanev and Schroeder signed. - Chest Rockwell
Wow. Wasn't aware of the cap hit. That's a really good signing.
Don't know what Ferriero's deal was, but at the same price, I'd take Halischuk over him.
I can see Tanev dragging out. I wouldn't be too surprised to see some more deals for Utica signed in the near future.
I don't think we'll see any signings over $1million until Tanev and Schroeder are sorted out, though, like you said. |

I wonder if Gillis went to Raymond before these last few signing and said, "I got a few gys who will play for 550-650, you interested in coming back at that?"
I know we all like to bash Raymond, but if you could get him for 550-750 range he's a solid player. |

I doubt any of these guys would sign a 2 way deal and I think that is what the Canucks are looking for, there are lots of spots available to fill in Utica.
Is there any word on us signing any of our current draft picks yet, I haven't seen anything. |

Hey Ian,
Not sure if you have a blog planned for this at some point, but over at HF there's a board about next year's lineup with point projections for each player...
Was going to post my guesses on here, but I know you've done similar blogs in the past, so I didn't want to jump the gun in case you had something planned...
Would definitely be interesting to see the disparity in projections between some of the Canucks fans. |

Yah, but I wouldn't have stayed here for 8+ years now if it was a dump.
It's a pretty good town, with good fans and a bit of a smalltown feel. |

I think he'd be signed if he was willing to accept that type of cash.
For the few weeks of the year he actually shows up, Raymond would totally be worth it on a contract $1million or under.
Who knows, the longer he waits, the worse the offers will likely get. |

You don't need a two-way deal to play in Utica. Two way deals just save teams a lot of money. |

Ok, so not that I'm opposed to signing any of the guys that are still out there to help this team, but fans on this board regularly complained about AV never giving youth a chance yadda yadda.
Here are the players we know are going to be here next year:
Sedin,Sedin,Burrows
Booth, Kesler,
Higgins, Hansen
Richardson, Sestito
Hamhuis, Bieksa
Edler, Garrison
Luongo
We can also safely plug in Kasian and I would assume that Tanev gets a deal done sooner than later. That leaves three everyday player positions plus 13th forward and 7th and 8th defencemen and backup goalie. Corrado also showed he can play at this level, and Schroeder has as good a shot as anyone to make the team (once he signs a new contract).
We are all assuming that Lack or Eriksson earns the backup job, the other starts in the AHL with Cannata as the backup.
The only players I would be remotely interested in signing would be 35+ players on bonus heavy contracts for one year only. If they excel and reach their bonus, the cap hit can be carried over to next season, when the cap is supposed to go up. Other than that, two way contracts only to fill out the roster in Utica next season. |

Mine wasn't really a blog. Just a lineup with point projections. |

Hey, you mentioned something about new arbitration rules. Am I correct that the new rules stipulate that if a team tenders a qualifying offer, i.e. retains "Restricted" rights for a free agent, and that player then files for arbitration that the team is stuck with whatever decision the arbitrator decides on?
If so, I can see a lot more RFA's becoming UFA's in the future if a contract isn't worked out prior to July 1st, or June whatever when they officially become FA's.
I wonder if a player can be traded once they file for arbitration, but before the hearing? |

Don't really have anything other than a lineup and numbers, though.
Wouldn't be enough for a blog.
I could post it on the board and I'm sure at least a few others would follow suit, but I don't really want jump the gun if Ian is planning a blog...
There really just guesses for poops....had a bit too much time of work lately... |

If the deal is under $3.5million/season, yes, they have to accept it.
If it's over, they can walk.
Not sure if a player can be traded once they've filed, but before they've had their arbitration...I'll have to check... |

I think Kassian will be on the team for sure. Where he ends up on the depth chart is up to him. Based on who we have right now, Kassian will be given a shot in the top 6 unless he is outplayed by either Jensen or Shirkaurk. If he loses a top 6 spot to one of them he slots in on the bottom 6.
I think Tanev will be on the team for sure as well.
As much as I liked Corrado last year I'm not sure how he would look over a 82 game schedule. I would be more comfertable signing a vet or 2 to be able to step in if Corrado has a regression. There are plenty of solid #6 guys still available. Unless Gillis is thinking that guys is Weber. I wouldn't mind signing Alberts again or a guy like him.
I think the 3rd line center will be Schroeder this year unless he is outplayed in camp by either Gaunce or Horvat.
Santorilli could be a wild card. He had good chemistry with Booth a couple of years ago so there could be some magic there. Or he could be the 13th forward.
I still think there are lots of UFA's available that would upgrade the 4th line to the point where they can play more then 6 minutes a game and acctually contribute. The last half dozen cup teams have had very effective 4th line. Sestitio and Wiese are not going to cut it. |

I think this will lead to more teams passing on qualifying offers as the risk of a big reward for fringe players (i.e. Weise) |

I'd be happy to have Raymond back for $1M. He's a bit soft, but he's a good defensive player who can occasionally contribute offensively. I'd have him on the 4th line and he could move up if he played hard or if (when) we had injuries to other players. He's not a defensive liability and he can fill in on other lines when needed. Sounds like an upgrade on anything else we're going to get for the 4th line.
Of course, I doubt he takes a $1M contract to play on the 4th line in Vancouver! |
