I still have a really hard time believing that Nonis coudln't find a taker for Grabovski when teams were so willing to dump money on crappy players like Filpulla and Weiss and Roy. Could've used that second compliance buyout on Liles and made the cap situation a lot nicer. |

I think so. It's because of how the system works. Players file for arb and the team can then elect a 1 or 2 yr deal. Gunnarsson and Fraser are UFA's next summer so they elect and get to UFAgency in 1 or 2 years (I assume the Leafs will elect 2 year deals if it goes that far).
Franson has 2 more years to UFAgency so the Leafs would've elected a 1 year deal for him. They are probably discussing a one year and a long term deal with him ...and obviously he's probably trying to force a long term deal. - The Law
If the player files, isn't it a 1 yr deal and if the team files then isn't it a 2yr deal?
Also, can't they sign long term extensions even after filing for arbitration? They just can't be offersheeted anymore right? |

I do too but he hasn't signed with any team yet. Maybe wants too much money. |

Which makes sense, he says he enjoys playing for Carlyle, can't see him leaving in a year or two |

crazy to think that the leafs were offered a 1st at the deadline before he signed his deal.. if you believe what was said and instead ended up with nothing.

Use Subban as the barometer. Cody signs for less or he'll be watching the games from home - faceto27
or you just dont call someone a crackhead based on personal assumptions. he put up numvers equalling over 50 in 82 games. justify sitting him... |

He's a UFa in 2 years so the Leafs don't want to give him a 2 year deal. Franson wants a multi year deal but the Leafs don't have the Cap room to give it to him. Leafs are probably angling really hard for a 1 year deal and Franson doesn't want that. Wouldn't be surprised to see this negotiation go into training camp and beyond. |

I read something the other day that said whichever side chooses arbitration the other side gets to pick whether it's 1 or 2 years. |

NO SH!T ! He should have been able to get at least a 1st round pick !
Because Grabovski signed a deal with an NHL club so quickly after getting bought out ?

Lots of pretty good players still haven't signed yet too which is strange.
Brunner, Grabovski, Jagr, Boyes, Prospal, Penner, Gilbert, Whitney, Lydman, Larose...
Probably see another bit of action once arbitration is wrapping up I guess. |

It's the reality of the Cap world. Young players and players on good contracts are worth a lot. The moment they sign a deal (even at a fair price) their value drops like an anchor. Grabo at 3 or 4 is gold .....Grabo at 5.5 is poop.
For all the bs about Seguin and his attitude I have to believe the trade had more to do with the fact that he was about to become a 5.75/yr player. |

That was the first legitimate shot at good minutes thus far in his NHL career, I see it being fairly likely that the upwad trend continues. as for bad in his own end, his positioning needs to be worked on, his first pass ability is one of the best on the team |

Well Grab at that point was a 50 point player, as a deadline pickup easily worth a late first.
