Briere wanted to come here. Morrow expressed interest, but after the fact.

I know we're desperate to sign anyone but could we really not look at signing players we need versus French players who want to Eric Lindros us?

With limited bucks to sign UFAs, it is a bit of a puzzle that Briere was chosen over Morrow. Morrow is younger and bigger, thereby filling the habs needs better. He also scored more than Briere last year, and will likely cost less than was paid for Briere.

The only logic in signing Briere is if there is a plan to move Desharnais. I don't believe this is the case, but if it is, Briere's presence might reduce the upset at losing Desharnais. He can also play C if Desharnais was moved and Galchenyuk is still developing.

If Morrow is signed at present, we either need to move another top 9 guy... insert Desharnais... or move someone slated for 4th line duty.

Pacioretty-Plekanec-Gionta
Galchenyuk-Eller-Gallagher
Morrow-Briere-Bourque
Prust-White/Dumont-Parros/Moen

I don't think Morrow can be as effective as he once was. The injuries has taken their toll on his style of play. Depends on the kind of deal he wants.

I will be shocked if he gets the same money Briere got. Morrow is a 3rd liner now with the possibility to move up in case of injury. Basically, he's Rene Bourque.

This.

Wouldn't mind Morrow but he has to come cheap.... and not for a long time.

Morrow could clearly help this team.

Package DD with Diaz ( in my dreams ) for a D and get Morrow.

It would clear up some room up front while helping out our fragile D.

Centers:

Plek
Briere ( can play wing but why not use him where he's best at)
DD
Eller
Chucky
White
Dumont

Clearly.. we need to make some room down the middle.

Morrow has been more useful to his team than Briere because the former can actually play defensively. Sure, Briere will score a bunch of goals in the playoffs, but he'll allow double that number against his team while he's on the ice. He's soft and has to be incredibly sheltered to be effective. Think Desharnais v.1.0.0.0.1. Oh, and he's old.

Morrow plays D and PK. Both of which we need on this team.

We need to make room down the middle without having to stack centers on top of each other to build a full sized guy.

Package DD and Diaz... yep, good plan.

That was a good signing.
- muffin_man

I agree, he's not spectacular at any one thing, but he's a good all around defenceman. He'll bring some stability and leadership to the blue line which I think they really need.

If some fans are impatient to MB after a shortened season, his first on his tenure as Habs GM, while he's not done finishing cleaning Gainey/Gauthier mess, improved from 15th to division winner.... I think that no one can help theses fans....

I doubt the Habs have takers for that package...

Maybe Diaz.. DD ? not sure.

When did free agency become an expression of interest? It's up to the GM to explore options and see which guys can meet a need and may be interested. I read somewhere that the habs were surprised Morrow was interested in playing in Montreal. Firstly, why? What does that say about how you feel about your own team. Secondly, why? Did you hear about his wife? Thirdly, why on earth have you not explored that and known one way or the other long before now?

Agreed...

This guy has a plan, but fans don't even give him a year to make changes. At least he's got patience, something that will surely pay in about 3 years (Or less, let's hope).

I'm all for us signing Morrow for say $2.5M. Would be great on our third line and bring leadership and toughness. We do however need to make some room upfront before that can happen.

Moving Desharnais will not be an easy task. Everyone talks about how "tradeable" the contract is. Absolutely. As long as it's attached to the right player. And I'm not sure DD is. Bergevin overestimated his value.

I had all kinds of patience for MB and was totally buying in to a team that would
begin to contend in 2014-15. I looked forward to how he saw the future. Then he signed DD for 4 years based on one good year playing on a line with a guy who had a career year and another guy who had a breakout year. Then I got less optimistic about how MB saw the future. I still have hope he will move him some time before 2014-15 season begins.

You do realize that the core of the team was built by Gauthier/Gainey, right? What did Bergevin add? A washed-up undersized defenseman an a few bottom-6 players?

Well he's also been a bit contradictory. Talks about size, size, size but he's made a small team even smaller in the past year.

Shift DD to wing, trade gionta.

DD, like Briere, had a bad season last year. Unlike Briere, DD is young and we will likely see a bounce back. No reason to think he couldn't get back north of 50 points again.

- muffin_man

Gio is injured... recovering from his 2nd bum arm. Should have been traded at the deadline last year. May still fetch something this year.

There is no evidence whatsoever that DD can play NHL level wing. He can't skate and is knocked off the puck like a toddler.
