I have a hunch Nonis wants no part of negotiating Dions next contract.
- robin_steele264

I think Dion leaves through free agency, if he does at all. I really can't see a trade that would help out more than him being in the line-up. He's not as good as everyone thought he would be, and he's not as bad as everyone makes him out to be now.

That's from last summer; things don't change much around here with scooby douche.

Coulda sworn I read something like that today.

Mike Augello: Pursuing Phaneuf?
- mikeinbuffalo

Can we ban any references to Bill Watters on this site?

The guy has the creepiest possible hate boner for Phaneuf. Dion Phaneuf at 4 million, Bill?

(frank) off already.

He did have a move up his sleeve: acquire Bolland and re-sign Bozak. Not hard to guess what comes next.
- gravyface

Resigning Bozak isn't much of a move in my opinion. It was his only option. Sadly.

Did you ever stop to think maybe you're the one that doesn't know much about hockey?
- Scooby_Doo

Did you not say that you winning the hockey buzz playoff pool means you know everything about hockey?

You are a joke buddy

There isn't a doubt about the fact that if Phaneuf was on the Oilers they would have significantly increase their chances of making the playoffs. If you don't think so then you don't really know much about hockey.

That said, Leafs need him just as much, so not sure why Nonis would trade him unless he has another move lined up to replace him.

- Cooshie

You could say that about literally 50 other dmen. It was the insinuation that it's impossible for the oilers to make the playoffs without specifically Phaneuf that's silly. And I never claimed anything further than that.

It's hard to see MacT making any more big moves this offseason. Our defense is nowhere near as bad as people think. J. Schultz will become an elite offensive defenseman and a bonafide #1, Klefbom will be a top 4 at worst, and Nurse is a stud. Of course this is a couple of years down the road and pretty optimistic, but Ference will be a great stop gap for the next breed of Oilers kids.
- TomKlassen

Pretty optimistic?
I'm surprised you didn't say that in a couple years Hall, Eberle, and Yaks will be the three finalists for the Hart and Art Ross in the same year.

The problem with trading Phaneuf is that there are no moves you could make to help us get better.

How many number one defensemen are out there who can play 25+ mins per night with AHL call-ups?

How many have consistently played against the top opponents in the worst situations?

How many can put up 40 points per year while throwing a boat load of hits and staying healthy?

How many can handle the pressure of playing in hockey's craziest market and dealing with pieces of poop like Bill Watters all the time?

And, finally, how many of those could you get for less than 6.5 million bucks and the equivalent of Matt Stajan and some scraps?

Yeah, that's crazy. Still, you need a big minute D. Ference is a big help but he's a complimentary guy and is getting up there so I wouldn't count on him for more than 18-20.

But it's the same way we've needed a legit #1 center since Sundin left: the UFA market is getting worse every year (Clarkson case in point; glad we landed him, but would a Clarkson guy fetch that kind of dough 5-10 years ago?) so you have to develop your core from within and draft well and use free agency to acquire role players and depth guys because it's unlikely you'll hit a home run with a big ticket UFA, if they ever go to market.

Or he could have insisted that Jeff Schultz would become the next Paul Coffey and break 100 points in a season like a certain blogger...

That blog is still the best thing I have ever read on this site.

It gets pretty tiring when people are like "You NEED Kesler/Jordan Staal/Ribeiro/O'Reilly" and when you try to reply that just because the leafs need a center doesn't mean their hand will be forced on a traderape deal, they reply with "Fine, enjoy sucking forever ".

Sometimes this site boils my blood.

Right you are. Jeff, Justin, whatever... I honestly stopped caring about the Schultz hype before he even made his choice.

That was one of the most annoying, drawn out sagas in recent memory. And that is saying a lot considering all the Jagr, Sundin, and Forsberg crap we've had to endure.

Eff Gunnarsson. I rode an elevator with him and Schenn in TB and I could probably snap his pencil neck with one hand. We don't need d like him.
I also got the feeling that if I told Schenn a riddle he would have an aneurysm.
