Yup.

See the Eklund thread for the stats.

Unfortunately, the worst value #1 in the league, and a guy who would be #1 on only a handful of other teams. Where there is smoke, there is fire, and the Dion rumors have been smoldering for a while now. I get the sense the Leafs are not particularly interested in having Dion as 'the guy' going forward.

This all makes sense. But trading Phaneuf without bringing in a defenseman to replace him will turn this next season into a writeoff.

Our blueline is sh!t with Phaneuf. Im scared to think of what it would be without him.
- Leafs43

He is not worth his ticket. It's about the contract, and his intangibles, not simply his stats.

Yes, I agree. With Phaneuf, the Leafs are in a situation where they have to fish, or cut bait. If they bring him in and sign him to a big $ deal, which he will want, he becomes an unmovable asset. And as I said earlier, I'm getting the feeling the Leafs are not all that comfortable with him as the 'Guy' on the back end, and the team leader. If they are going to trade, they will get better return now than they will at the deadline. It's pretty much decision time on Dion. I hope he gets moved.

not that EDM doesn't need Phaneuf, just TO needs him just as much
- TheNugeIsHuge

This is 100% true....
The stupidity part is when Oilers fans talk about Phaneuf being over rated and not good.

Bill Watters is a mouth breather attempting to remain relevant.

Phaneuf bashers get over it he's staying at 6.5 and the Leafs are better for it.

And conversely if Leafs fans think that the Oilers NEED Phaneuf specifically to make the playoffs, then based on that stupidity alone, Oilers fans should just walk away from the topic.
- Morris

There isn't a doubt about the fact that if Phaneuf was on the Oilers they would have significantly increase their chances of making the playoffs. If you don't think so then you don't really know much about hockey.

That said, Leafs need him just as much, so not sure why Nonis would trade him unless he has another move lined up to replace him.

A lot of people thought Nonis wouldn't trade/buyout Grabo unless he had a move up his sleeve. We were wrong
Circumstances changed, of course, but I'm done thinking Nonis is a two-step thinker at this point. I think he's just kinda winging it.

Could be....I think the point is more that Phaneuf trade rumors are nothing more then a senile bitter old man's rantings then anything else. Leafs need Phaneuf as much or more then teams that might be looking to trade for him.

Coming from you, that is actually a compliment. If you were to compliment my knowledge level, that is when I truly would know I know nothing!

I agree. Without him on our D, it flat-out sucks defensively. (frank)ing Bill Twaatters. Just wishful thinking for him.

I have a hunch Nonis wants no part of negotiating Dions next contract.

He did have a move up his sleeve: acquire Bolland and re-sign Bozak. Not hard to guess what comes next.
