Phanuef was paired for part of last season (top unit) with Kostka, who was let go, and to my knowledge hasn't signed anywhere else.

Not Phaneuf, but an upgrade defensively would go a long way to helping your chances. You guys have done nothing to improve one of the worst bluelines in the league (for this year anyway). Justin Schultz will improve, but they seriously need help there.

It's hard to see MacT making any more big moves this offseason. Our defense is nowhere near as bad as people think. J. Schultz will become an elite offensive defenseman and a bonafide #1, Klefbom will be a top 4 at worst, and Nurse is a stud. Of course this is a couple of years down the road and pretty optimistic, but Ference will be a great stop gap for the next breed of Oilers kids.

I was thinking the Leafs would be looking to upgrade their blueline for the same reasons.

I think J Schultz will be a good top pairing D man in the next 2-3 years. Klefbom is extremely impressive. I went to the dev camp n couldn't find a flaw in his game, but I'll wait until he's played 20 games in NA before I say he's top4 at worst.

I think Ference'll be gone as soon as Nurse is ready, 3-4 years.

Bill Watters is so full of hate for Phaneuf, he can't be taken seriously as a "Source". Everytime he discussed Dion on his radio show, he'd swear and they'd have to bleep him. He underrates Dion laughably. There's no playoffs with him next season. He's a legit #1 D-Man.

Edmonton desperately needs a Dion Phaneuf to get better on the backend.

This guy right here, he knows what he's talking about.

We'll have a really good D-core with Rielly, Gardiner, Finn, Percy etc. But that's at least 3 years away before they're all regulars. We need some veteren help on the blue-line to help now instead of trading it away.
