What about Letang to Toronto for

Gardiner
Kulemin
Biggs
2014 1st round pick

I know it's steep but in order to get a #1 defenseman in this league you're going to have to over pay. Just think about a Phanuef and Letang top pair.

- quinnjj

Im going to give you a polite, (frank) no. Its not that Letang isn't awesome, but Gardiner can do much that he does offensively, is just as fast a skater, just as hard a shot, he's just young with lots to learn at a farrrr better cap hit. Kulemin is crucial on our penalty kill and will be a big part of our 3rd line with Bolland and McClement, and Biggs (our future Clarkson) not to mention our bloody 1st in next years draft? Gzus lolll, i wouldn't want Letang for the first two players mentioned. We don't need Letang, we've got plenty of offensive young D coming through the pipe, we can afford to be patient. We don't want that ludicrous contract either, we've got kids (Kadri, Franson, Gunnarsson) to sign right now and will have a hard time getting it under the cap as it is. Letang makes zero sense.

Ok, so lets remove the coloured shades a minute.

In terms of production, Markov and Phaneuf aren't too far off. Markov has slightly better career highs.

In terms of the physical side of defense, Phaneuf wins hands down. Significantly more hits and blocks.

In terms of contract, Markov wins. $5.75m is more friendly than $6.5m. Both are UFA this year and will get a raise. Phaneuf is 6.5 years younger.

Markov achieved well this year playing with the Norris trophy winner. Phaneuf did okay playing much of the time with AHL guys.

Overall, I'd say that they are relatively comparable. Phaneuf brings more physical defense, Markov is better offensively and carrying the rush. There really isn't a major amount of difference between them though.

So now I ask, would you giive up Markov for a 1st round pick?

- lumlums

Markov is so overrated its refrickentarded. Phaneuf is far and away better than that overaged piece of glass. Thats like saying Connolly and Kadri are comparable because their career highs in points per game are similar. Its bad enough that your responding to an idiot (his name is Komisarous...LOL -he was a Komi fanboy before he came to tdot-), don't stoop to his level to spark a stupid conversation lolll.

Why is Kulemin untouchable?
For the penguins to do this deal Gardiner and Kulemin would be non-negotiable, they have to be 2 of the 4 pieces coming back. Unless you want to put Morgan Reilly in Gardiner's place.

You counter offer is an absolute joke.

- quinnjj

Dude your original offer is an effin joke. Nobody wants your garbage Letang. We saw how bad he was against Boston, we aren't blind, he was atrocious. At that contract as well, i wouldn't trade Gardiner alone for him.

Gardiner will never be Letang. He might be a top 4 but never a Norris trophy candidate.

Toronto fans live on cloud nine...most of you think Phaneuf is a 3.5 million dollar player that's just plain lunacy. And by the way Letang is a bargain at 7.25 million especially compared to all of these other contracts...he could have easily gotten 8+ on the open market. His contract is a discount if anything.

- quinnjj

Gardiners assets are better than Letangs (harder shot, faster skater, just as strong). He just hasn't put it all together mentally yet. The fact the Letang was a Norris candidate is 100% due to the fact he plays for the poster team, next to the poster child of the NHL in Crosby. Put him on Columbus or Toronto or almost anywhere else and he never gets mentioned in that sentence.

A tiny bit of it does: what's called the salary cap recapture.

They will be billed for $250,000 for the next 12 years (or is it longer?).

But the whole contract doesn't remain on the cap, because he signed it before the age of 35.

ah... yes.. and if there's anything Canuck fans know about it is large contracts and overpaid players....

how's that CAP space workin' out for you?

- BorjeFan4Ever

This would pack a lot more punch if you hadn't just signed David Clarkson to a 7yr/$36.5M deal.

What's funny is how Leaf fans would laugh at Habs fans when they said the same about PK when he was breaking into the league.

Right. Except here's the thing: Markov is 34 and coming off of back-to-back major surgeries to the same knee. He's broken. But prior to that, his body of work ANNIHILATES Phaneuf's. Markov was a top 5 defenseman in the NHL for 5-7 years. Phaneuf's made an entire career out of 2.5 good years in Calgary.

There's a reason he tops the list of overrated players as determined the NHLPA every year.

Plus, and this is my favorite: PK >>>>>>>>>>>>> Every defenseman the Leafs have.

Markov was a top 5 defenseman for a 5-7 year period?

This would be news to Chara, Lidstrom, Pronger, Boyle, Neidermayer, Weber, Phaneuf (who was dominant for his first few years), etc.

What 5-7 year period are you referring to? Because I bet I can always find more than 5 better defensemen.
