I don't think Dion is a terrible defenceman at all but he is not a guy to build your back end around. He's at best a good complimentary piece. Dion would be better if he wasn't asked to do so much. I think the 'C' is misplaced on him and he would be good on a team with a bonafide star defenceman. That way Phaneuf could focus on playing physical and not having to try and be an offensive guy so much.

NJ doesn't need to add any more D. They already have enough of that. They need offence.

Also, there is no way Dion gets anywhere close to $6.5M on his next contract.

He will get at least 6 million/yr.

all I'm saying is that its not accurate...Mat Martin is not hands down the best hitter in the league sorry
- flashfire

Right but when Luke Schenn leads all defenseman in hitting for 3 straight seasons on 2 different teams you know the guy's a monster hitter.

Whitney won't come cheap...3 million/yr is guess.

Phanuef won't resign for less than 6 million/yr.

I don't think Phaneuf at $6M for less than 5 years is terrible.

True... compared to Streit, Phaneuf is a (frank)ing bargain!

If he goes to FA there will be multiple teams lining up to give him a 5yr 30 million dollar deal.

What about Letang to Toronto for

Gardiner
Kulemin
Biggs
2014 1st round pick

I know it's steep but in order to get a #1 defenseman in this league you're going to have to over pay. Just think about a Phanuef and Letang top pair.

To Toronto: 2015 First round pick.

To New Jersey: Dion Phaneuf.

Not even close to enough to get Phaneuf.

He's killing our cap flexability. We are weak in the bottom 6 and our depth is going to be hurting even more next year.

Yes I would absolutely love to have another defenseman who can't play defence...especially with Phaneuf. No...I'd sooner let Pittsburgh keep him, as one of these days Pittsburgh will be in a log jam cap problem cause of Letang and then somebody is gonna pick him up for peanuts

Nice pic!

Anyway, Shero will never give away Letang, he'd get rid of Fluery first.

You're just giving Phaneuf away for an over paid 3rd line center. That's it, why so under valued? Or are you a closet Devils fan?

Yes, because after losing Parise one season and Kovalchuk and Clarkson the next, the best thing for NJ to do is trade one of their few remaining offensive producers... great plan!

I don't believe the Leafs are having any serious discussions about trading away Phaneuf when they have yet to re-sign Franson, Fraser, and Gunnarson.
He might have to be moved in the future as those re-signings (plus Kadri) are going to put the Leafs right up against the cap. That won't help them heading into next summer with Kessel, Gardiner, and Reimer all looking for raises and extensions.

read the bottom of the article...trust me, what constitutes a hit varies greatly from building to building

But if every team plays in different buildings around the league every night, wouldn't it just be a wash?
