I agree. No need to move massive assets to land Pietrangelo or Weber, they can get a somewhat lesser guy in Bouwmeester or Phaneuf for less.

Thanks Bill. I fully agree, and would even go one step further. I would say that they should never draft that type of forward. The reason? You can easily get low cost options through Free Agency or as undrafted FA.

Totally agree. What's the point of wasting a 3rd rd pick on a 4th liner when you can shake the UFA tree and get them for league minimum? We gave up nothing to get Rosehill and Hall. We just gave up a 3rd rounder for a future Hall. This team needs a competent asset manager.

If the Flyers traded the 3rd rd pick for a 4th liner from another team, would that have been a good trade? Getting one that might make your 4th line in a few years is even worse.

While I'm not the biggest fan of the Goulbourne selection either, teams don't generally take lower-ceiling guys high unless they feel that perhaps there's more there than meets the eye. They took Klotz b/c they thought he might have some power forward potential which, of course, now looks kind of ridiculous.

For example, would you take a player with the following draft-year stat line as high as the 2nd-round? Keep in mind that this player also had some major physical defects that required surgery, and was passed over in the WHL bantam draft and then failed to make even a Junior A team out of camp:

Chances are good that Goulbourne is just another wasted pick, but there's always the off chance that he turns out to be a pleasant surprise. Maybe not Lucic-level, but a Prust/Clutterbuck is still a pretty valuable piece to have on hand, and generally not cheap to acquire via UFA.

I don't get the pick. I would have gotten it later had he been picked in the 6th or 7th. But not in the third round. And if he was gone by the 6th or 7th, there were other Goulbourne type players that would have been available.

That being said, I will root for him to make it and prove us all wrong.

I agree on the premise of the blog. Aim higher with a 3rd round pick. But they might see more to the player, then meets the eye.
