Coburn doesn't have the offensive game
- JAKEw1234

Neither does Jbo

Well the Flyers will have the $6 million for Timo coming off the books so they should both be in play unless they resign.
- jstross

I swear to god, if we sign Phaneuf there will be locker room fights between him and the Schenns. The dude is just a big ol' giant doosh bag, and he's known for his dooshiness around the whole league.

The usage and shot-differential numbers would say otherwise. Neither are on the level of a Pronger defensively, they're both prone to some brain cramps, but they're both very effective top-line dmen who are capable of matching up against the other teams' best.
- Tomahawk

I agree they are both very effective. I'd personally prefer Bouwmeester. Phaneuf is far more prone to brain cramps. Bouwmeester is very consistent defensively. And a lot more steadier with the puck. Which is why I prefer him.

Do you guys consider Bouwmeister and adequate replacement for Timo next year?

$4.5 of that is going right to Giroux.
- moylander

If you want to sign it off that way. I'd say Giroux's $4.5 is coming off of the cap space we get from the cap rising 10%. That gives us $6 mil off from Kimmo, and $1.5+ coming off of the cap rise. That gives us $7.5+ to resign Coots, Schenn, and Read. Then we can try to clear up room to sign a Dman like JBo.

Cap is supposed to go up about $6 million. So, if that happens, there's $7.5 left, but the need to resign Couts, Schenn, Gus, Read.. I think they'll have the money to make a run at one of the 2. Long way to go though. I'm really hoping they can get a conditional 3 or 4 for Mez and then try not to spend up to the cap until more towards the deadline.

No but don't forget we'll also have to resign Mason and possibly Razor depending on how things go. If we're gonna go after a JBo or Phaneuf it's looking increasingly likely that Read won't return, as he'll command the biggest return out of the whole group.

would this be a better flyers team than what we have now?

trade schenn, coots, + 2 1st rounders for Weber
Trade Coburn, Mez for picks - try and recoup a 1st w/ Coby
Regular buyout Bourdon

Hartnell-Giroux-Voracek
Simmonds-Lecavalier-Read
McGinn-Laughton-Talbot
Rosehill-Hall-Rinaldo

Timonen-Weber
Streit-Schenn
Gus-Grossmann
Gervais

Mason
Emery

It fits under the cap including pronger's hit.

Thoughts?

I would not include both Schenn and Couturier for Weber. Why buyout Bourdon? All they have to do is waive him.

But is it a better 'team'? The bourdon thing is a small detail to get under the cap before the season began... waive him, trade him, buy him out.

It would definitely stop our cap problems for next season. If we give both Schenn and Couturier, I would want it to be in a trade for Pietrangelo, not Weber. Better age match up, and all that. I also doubt you'd have to give Schenn and Coots and 2 1sts for Weber, I believe the reported price was Schenn and Coots and maybe a 2nd. For Pietrangelo I think fans of most other teams would tell you that Schenn and Coots for Pietrangelo is a pretty even deal. Tbh I'd like to see one of Coots, Schenn, or Read moved this offseason, so we have far less cap issues next offseason. I'd prefer to keep Schenn over Coots, because I could easily see him on our 1st line LW in the future, and I may be one of the few who values the idea of keeping the brothers together. If Coots, Read +++ could get us piet, though, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

That may or may not be a better team for next season... but what we know for sure is that it would make for a much poorer team in the future w both Schenn and Couturier gone and having virtually nothing in the system to replace them with. You're also going to end up over-relying on old-timers like Streit and Vinny, who we can expect to experience serious decline over the next few seasons. It would effectively cut short the window of opportunity for the current group, and almost guarantee that Giroux's wasting his prime years on a rebuilding team.

Adding a player like Weber goes a long way. But I'm not crazy about the 3rd line. I think they lack offensive depth.

I think it lacks offensive depth. The defense is definitely better, but the 3rd and 4th lines will have trouble scoring

Nashville paid the $10+ million June payment so I don't think they'll budge. I'd love to have Weber for 2014, but would a team with Weber as their 1 and no Schenn, no couts and loss of 2 1st rounders really be better than plugging in JayBo or Phanuef as their 1 and keep those 4 assets?

I think in this theoretical we should be resigning Gagne.

I've traded Mezaros for nothing. I've traded Coots, Read (with extension), Coburn, 2 1sts, and whatever the hell we need to add on to that for Pietrangelo, signed at $7.5. I've resigned Gagne to a probably more realistic number of $2.5 for 2 years. Next off season we clear up some major cap space, losing $1.5 from Kimmo coming off the books (I took Giroux's raise out of Kimmo's cleared space.) and with the cap rising $6 mil +. We'd have around $7.5 clear next offseason, and I seriously doubt we'd lose anything more than $500k of that do to extensions. That gives us ample room to delve into the free agent market and see what we could get. In this theoretical we would have to LTIR Pronger, though. With BSchenn being the only remaining musketeer in this theoretical, I believe we'd lose $2.35 mil off the cap next offseason, so we'd still have around $5 mil. Then we'd have to resign Mason and Razor, and assuming the financial worst and they both have good season and require a modest raise, I'd say we'll actually be pretty close to the ceiling.

I'd stand pat this year unless a great deal comes up. Then go after JayBo or Phanuef in UFA. You keep Schenn, Coots and the 2 # 1s and have the following D.

Jaybo-Schenn
Streit-Coburn
Gus-Grossman
Lauridsen/Bourdon

I agree. No need to move massive assets to land Pietrangelo or Weber, they can get a somewhat lesser guy in Bouwmeester or Phaneuf for less.

I don't have a right answer....

while I agree with MJL and Jsaq the bottom 6 are poor scorers I think thats easier to fix in than our defensive issues. I also think this team can survive without Coots and Schenn. Jake, Giroux, Hartnell, Simmonds, Read, and Vinny are a formidable top 6 for at least the next 3 years until Hartsy and Vinny start to play a lesser role. Anything really beyond that is too far out into the future to worry about now... so much can happen by then.

Just thought it to be a thought provoking scenario.

On a totally different fron, I like the idea of bringing Gagne back, but I'd like to see a McGinn or another young forward get the role. It's the only way to move forward. You need those young cheap options moving forward. I'd probably get laughton out there too. If not only to audition him for a trade.

I would bet anything that both Phanuef and Bouwmeester don't get to FA. They will be traded and signed by their new teams before that happens. JMO
