Hemsky would automatically become your best forward and at the trade dead line would be worth 2 first rounders and a top six forward.

Don't get me wrong, i'd take both on my team in a heart-beat. I just think Tavares has more skill & is the better player right now.

I think it's extremely close.

On the Tavares vs Hall thing.

I think Hall often does carry the Oilers on his back. I think he is a dynamic, impact player every single night pretty much. He is awesome.

But I do think Tavares is slightly better at the moment. The main reason I think that tho is mostly because of position. If Hall were a center I think he would be as good as Tavares if not better for his age.

That's a big what if tho.

As it is Hall has as big an impact as possible for a winger. But wingers just don't impact the game as much as centers. Hall would have to get 100 points+ to be considered better than even Bergeron who is lucky to get 70 points.

Absolutely & stats don't tell the entire story. So many people get hung up on stats.

Don't get me wrong, they're both solid players, my opinion is Tavares is the better player & you think Hall is - nothing more to debate over.

Stats never tell the entire story. I just wasnt shocked at all that u thought the 'other' guy was better than the oiler

Aren't those voted on by the media. Eastern biased media... Toronto biased media? And he still was only 10th...

I think if anything that shows exactly how terrible he really is. If most Toronto based media don't even have him in the top ten he really shouldn't be in the top 100.

I am of course exaggerating, but seriously, who the hell would put Dion in the top ten of NHL defenseman. That's a joke if I've ever heard one.

Sure he was in the top ten for points, but the guy can, and all too often is, a nightmare outside the offensive zone.

I think he is a solid top 4 D-man and a great offensive defenseman but my definition of a true top pairing defenseman does not include the likes of Dion.

Edit: Although looking at the list of D-men I suppose technically speaking he is a top pairing NHL d-man. I just hate his defensive game. He leaves a lot to be desired. Id put him closer to 60th than 10th but that technically puts him in the top pairing category.

For all his warts (and he has some, no question), Dion is still a legitimate top pairing defenseman: he's capable of logging huge minutes, plays all situations, plays nearly every game, has a well-rounded skillset. Having said that, there's at least 10 other defensemen I'd take over Phaneuf.

the deal would start with phaneuf and gagner. additional pieces would be added to make up for cap hit, etc.

Enough of this crap.....there aren't many 40 point 200 hit top pairing d-men in the NHL. I know the popular thing is to rip guys that show the slightest dent in their own armour, but the poop Phaneuf does, ie. carry 2 AHL d-men through last season, and still finish in the top 10 in virtually every d-man category is very underated. Smid is a decent defensive d-men, but I can name 30 better ones off the top of my head, how many d-men can you name that score 40 points and get 200 hits?
- mykokes

Quite civilly, I ask you to do so now. I don't think I could name 30 purely defensive dmen better than Smid right now. Only guy in the league that's top 10 in hits and blocked shots, and he's 4th in PK on a good PK. Name 30 defensive d-men that are currently better than him.

Morris, I will later today or in the morning, on the road with the wife right now.

But for starters, just to get the list started, Girardi, M. Staal, R. Mcdonagh., B. Coburn, Rob Scuderi, Karl Alzner, Brad Stuart, Dan Hamhuis, Tim Gleason, Barret Jackman, Francois Beuchemin....will continue list when I get back.

Good list so far, but I feel like you're definitely starting to get into guys around Smid's level (not to mention a few guys that are closer to what you'd call "two-way guys"). I won't hold judgment until you name the other 19 though.
