Why is it you have such infatuations with terrible D-men?

Dion Phaneuf was practically thrown out of Calgary for his poor play.

I know far too many flames fans and to say he wore out his welcome for a lot of them is an understatement.

Dion, much like a lot of players, good play disappeared as soon as he got a big contract.

He has been much better in Toronto than Calgary but still really is a pale shadow of what he was a long time ago.

I do not want to see him on our team.

Have him and Gilbert come back so we can have the worst top pairing in NHL history.

Does anyone actually watch some of these players play? Or does having a good reputation from 5+ years ago just make people gush about getting them???

I don't want phaneuf to play in Edmonton. He is one year away from FA and we would have to offer a first plus. I personally think he is overrated but he's still a legit top 2 guy, just bottom tier from the other legit ones.

The oilers need that guy, but the price to get him and then the price to keep him afterwards isn't worth it for the oilers. Maybe if that was the last piece from putting a solid cup run together he could help but we aren't.

The oilers would probably have to give up a first a roster player and a mid prospect, not worth it IMO. There probably isn't anyone better available roght now immediately, I'd rather take a run at getting Zach bogosian who we could then lock up long term and have him be that guy, and maybe j.schultz, Darnell Nurse or Klefbom could be the other half or something like that

Good God.

If the Leafs put Phaneuf up at the deadline they will get a lot more than Smid.

They could get some return putting up Hemsky at the deadline but he would have to have had a healthy and productive season. Phaneuf is going to have a normal season and you are guaranteed a good return,

certainly better than Smid.

This whole thread is rediculous. If the Leafs are not looking to resign him to an extension it will have everything to do with the salary hit because Dion is getting paid the going rate for a big, physical, 40+ point getting , top 30 D. That would be about 7 million per on the open market I think. my money says they find a way to get it done. If not, his trade value is at least two 1sts, a young roster player, and a prospect, and I don't see that price dropping at the deadline either.

The Oilers , I'm sure would love this guy but after paying a heavy price for him we would need an extension. No way he signs less than a 6Yr X 7million in the summer. Would we want that? First 3 years for sure, but what happens when Nurse, Klefbom and J.Schultz are the stars of our defence? We're gonna be killing ourselves to get rid of that contract.
Truth is, if we want to go balls deep for a top 30 D-man, we need to get somewhere around 3 or 4 years out of him and be able to move on from there. With Dion it will be too little or too much, so we should move on from this idea.

I think you could probably say the same about some Edmonton fans over rating their own players too....doesn't mean they represent the fan base.

I specified some leafs fans. There's a lot of delusional fans here. Look at my location.

Hey Cloutier, Phaneuf has been a locker room cancer ever since his junior days & I know this for a fact because my brother played pro hockey with a player who spent a lot of time with Dion in Red Deer & 90% of the guys couldn't stand him because of his arrogance.

Then he goes to Calgary & becomes a cancer in that room after his 1st season so don't come on here & tell us he would be fine in the Oilers dressing room. They don't need a jackass like him to spoil the rest of the room.

Having said that, the Leafs for some reason, like the guy a lot so if you think you're going to pawn Hemsky off as part of a Phaneuf deal, you are clued out.

And once again, you're saying the Oilers don't have to give up anything of significance & no Smid is not of significance, he's more of a throw-in. I guess you're still dreaming about those untouchables you idiot.

He's good and realistic...although I disagree quite a bit with him on this.
There are a lot more then 4 players I would take over Hall in the NHL (and I am a big Hall fan too).

- Cooshie

not so sure. Hall was 9th in scoring this year while missing 3 games n he's only 21. I'm a huge fan of hall(obviously). I personally think he's as good as Tavares if not better. PPG tracking better

to be fair, the voting is pretty eastern-TO biased. Kadri got some Selke votes

Sorry Nuge, Tavares is better than Hall although not all GM's would take him over Hall.

Tavares carries the Isles, Hall doesn't do that just yet in Edmonton plus Tavares has loads of upside we've still not seen. Hall does as well, I just don't think he has as much.

Dion is legit though. He might not be in the same class exactly as Weber and Chara but I struggle to name 30 better top pairing D. There are some (younger) names for sure but I would take him before Edler, Campbell , Markov, Mike Green, Boyle, and a host of others. In fact, I would venture to say he would be the best D on close to 20 teams in the NHL, mos def including Edmonton.

Absolutely & stats don't tell the entire story. So many people get hung up on stats.

Don't get me wrong, they're both solid players, my opinion is Tavares is the better player & you think Hall is - nothing more to debate over.

Aren't those voted on by the media. Eastern biased media... Toronto biased media? And he still was only 10th...

I think if anything that shows exactly how terrible he really is. If most Toronto based media don't even have him in the top ten he really shouldn't be in the top 100.

I am of course exaggerating, but seriously, who the hell would put Dion in the top ten of NHL defenseman. That's a joke if I've ever heard one.

Sure he was in the top ten for points, but the guy can, and all too often is, a nightmare outside the offensive zone.

I think he is a solid top 4 D-man and a great offensive defenseman but my definition of a true top pairing defenseman does not include the likes of Dion.

Edit: Although looking at the list of D-men I suppose technically speaking he is a top pairing NHL d-man. I just hate his defensive game. He leaves a lot to be desired. Id put him closer to 60th than 10th but that technically puts him in the top pairing category.

A good example of that is the small amount of Leaf fans that visit the Oiler threads to troll.

So your ready to deal us Darnell Nurse and a first? Or maybe Taylor Hall and a second for Phaneuf? He isn't coming free, so good luck trying to send us nothing back, in return.
- PrinceLH

Why not..we would get nothing(aka Phaneuf the Goof) in return

fair.

I see it as Hall's a year younger, had 3 more points in 3 less games. Tavares shot 4.8% higher than his career average. Hall shot at 1.5% lower than his. Tavares had easier zonestarts. I think Hall has the near same offensive upside and the ability to play tough comp at a very young age
