So right dude - Kessel? are you serious? The guy is so far behind Hall that even talking about them in the same comparison sentence is a waste of time. Hall is a god on ice while Kessel, he is just a poser - I don't think I would trade a mid first round pick for him.
As for Phaneuf - you are bang on!! I don't even think he would be a top 4 on Edmonton - why the hell would they ever give up someone like Smid or Hemsky for at best a 4 and most likely a 5 dman?

How did this remotely make sense for The Leafs? Why would Noni's trade his captain and only legitimate to pairing defensemen for a minor upgrade upfront and another 3/4 guy. If The Leafs are moving Phaneuf it's to improve the future --they are not swapping one year contracts.

Phaneuf is awful, your entire fan base hates him... Yet someone will have to overpay for him?

Enough of this crap.....there aren't many 40 point 200 hit top pairing d-men in the NHL. I know the popular thing is to rip guys that show the slightest dent in their own armour, but the poop Phaneuf does, ie. carry 2 AHL d-men through last season, and still finish in the top 10 in virtually every d-man category is very underated. Smid is a decent defensive d-men, but I can name 30 better ones off the top of my head, how many d-men can you name that score 40 points and get 200 hits?
