I find leaf fans soo amusing you guys just lose your sh!t if you read something you don't like. Clouts isn't the GM. So just calm down and breath. Call him stupid all you want, but you're the ones coming here and losing your (frank)ing minds about something that will happen |

How do you figure? Dion's only a year older than, but somehow was on a 50 point pace playing some of the toughest minutes in the NHL, getting the most defensive zone starts by an NHL d-man.......Smid's steady, but 4 points in 48 gp I'd expect from a goon, not a defensive d-man, Smid hits but at 20 minutes ATOI on a non-playoff time, pales in comparision to 25 minutes plus by a guy on a playoff team. - mykokes

So why are you here, inflaming things? Don't care what Cloutier writes about. Just sick of other teams fans trying to unload their untagged garbage on our doorstep. Last year, it was the Nucks, this year, you guys. |

Dion is more on the downward trend then smid - Snagglepuss
Huh? Didn't Dion just finish in top 10 in Norris voting this year?
On pace this year for 48pts, 224hits, 155 Blocked Shots, 25TOI P/G, 28yrs old...
Yeah, sounds like Dion is more on downward trend then Smid!! LOL
Smid is an average at best stay-at-home dman that could be found most years as UFA's. Keep Smid, as you obviously value him more then anyone would come close to paying him.

Greg Zanon blocks shots too. Komisarek used to lead the league in BS and Hits at one point.

We are moving up in the standings, going forward. Why would we rip this team apart, now that we've earned an identity. If your going to trade for one of our key assets, don't expect us to take your overvalued salary cap sh!t. I'm not a huge Phaneuf fan, but he has value and giving a couple of players on the down side of their careers for him, with high cap hits, is ludicrous. - PrinceLH
Take a deep breath, compose yourself... Now look at what we got him for. |

I do recall that he kicked things off by calling us laughable. And I didn't call him stupid : ) I'm actually just here making a case that Phaneuf is worth more than smid and hemsky. or in other words, having a hockey discussion - mykokes
I know you didn't. But there's other ones that do. And THOSE are the ones I find entertaining. I'll give you credit for being the most relaxed leaf fan I've had discussions with though.
I also think Smid + Hemmer for Phaneuf is a joke.. Just so were on the same page haha. |

This isn't a trick question, how many d-men in the NHL put up the numbers he has? How much are they paid? - mykokes
I said he will get a raise, I also said that i don't think he is worth it. I don't care about his hit numbers, they don't tell the whole story. A big hit is a negative when it puts him out of position creating an odd man rush against. I consider him a defensive liability. They had better figure out what they are doing with him soon, potential p.r. nightmare with the captain during a season that should be filled with some pretty good vibes. |

Do you fuktards realize that he gets paid based on the number of hits and you're taking his troll bait. |

the only things going up on his downward trend are his point production and his team in the standings. |

i dont see this as issue as most leaf fans dont see him as the best captain choice. |

As much as we all (including Leafs fans) rag on Phaneuf he's the closest thing we have to a top pairing defenseman. Who else would eat his minutes? Gunnarsson? Gardiner? Liles? Franson? Fraser?
We have about a dozen 4/5/6 defensemen right now; nobody could step in and fill that role, so only way Phaneuf moves would be to make room for another #1 and we and half the league are looking for one of those. |

Wow Stauffer was right again after his interview with Watters. He said it was a product of Watters that is all, like Clouts said. If the deal were to happen it would be a contract dump on the part of the Leafs. |

Who else is going to captain the team? Lupul? Guy's hurt more than he plays. Love the guy when he's healthy, but he's not really captain material, great A, but not the team leader. Maybe Clarkson in due time, but I haven't watched him play a lot so couldn't say either way. |

Its based on actual read throughs of his blog. I'm all for supporting a guy who blogs on here, so its moot. It's not personal or anything for me. Clouts is fine most of the time for me. |

right, not a lot of options...
but if it changed to someone like clarkson or lupul i dont see leaf fans being upset by the switch....no pr problem as other guy was saying. |

He's making fun of you Cloutier with that offer. That's the type of deals you propose for the Oilers. Hemsky for a 1st + prospect? Laughable |

I found the comment about whoever gave Phaneuf the C is an idiot a subtle shot at Burke. I had no clue that Watters and Burke didn't like each other, I thought they were all buddies, being mutual friends with Pat Quinn. |

Good God.
If the Leafs put Phaneuf up at the deadline they will get a lot more than Smid.
They could get some return putting up Hemsky at the deadline but he would have to have had a healthy and productive season. Phaneuf is going to have a normal season and you are guaranteed a good return,
certainly better than Smid.

The only PR nightmare is letting him walk for nothing at the end of the year.
That might just happen.
As far as an emotional attachment to him. I don't think many fans would shed a tear to see him go.

Enough of this crap.....there aren't many 40 point 200 hit top pairing d-men in the NHL. I know the popular thing is to rip guys that show the slightest dent in their own armour, but the poop Phaneuf does, ie. carry 2 AHL d-men through last season, and still finish in the top 10 in virtually every d-man category is very underated. Smid is a decent defensive d-men, but I can name 30 better ones off the top of my head, how many d-men can you name that score 40 points and get 200 hits? - mykokes
I think Clouts' point might be that how many of those 30 dmen are signed for 4 years at 3.5 mil per, are available, and come with a legitimate top 6 forward and whose team would be willing to give that much for one year of Phaneuff.
No one is suggesting you're going to replace Dion, but in terms of value coming back (unless they intend to re-sign him), that's probably what you're looking at, a top 4 Dman and a legit NHLer... right now... I don't know what you'd get at the trade deadline for him |
