Hemsky n N Schultz for Bernier+2nd? I think EDM'd need to retain some salary n I think NJ wants a younger blue line - TheNugeIsHuge
I was talking to a couple of them over there and they told me that they'd like a more offensive blue line. |

Joking of course. My oldest daughter is going on 15. I own a gun and a shovel and Alberta has lots of secluded places.

What you would RATHER have is a coach that knows how to get your young to play and be professionals.
Oh yeah, you got that now
I think we know, within 2 years, just how good your kids are going to end up being.
Edmonton makes the playoffs this year. - Aetherial
We're not gonna know within 2 years. The core is 19-22 years old. You don't get to be a gull grown man till about 25-26 years old. They've still got a lot of weight to put on and man strength to acquire |

You know that guy who counters every conversation with " well,technically..." ? We all know at least one guy like that....anyway, nobody likes that guy , even if he's smarter , he's still less popular than the guy that drills farts in crowded elevators. - Jeropotato
Is "drill" the proper verb for a fart?
I would think it would be "let" or "float" or "release". |

Intangibles don't matter if a guy sucks, in terms of on ice product.
But I really don't see Penner as being that much better than a healthy Jones. Not so much better that it's worth his bad attitude. That's the only place where I think there's disagreement.
And, more importantly, stuff like coachability and character have more impact on the locker room than the ice anyway. We might not be able to gauge the full impact just by watching. - Morris
that's fair.
I don't know how Penner is in the room or anything although I'd take him over Jones (he says for the 800th time) |

I think advanced stats shed light on a lot of things that have been ignored for a long time. It's especially crazy to think people have been evaluating talent with +/- when they could be using a fairly simple but much more telling alternative in CorsiRelQoC.
Apparently, the stats guys loved Perron and that was a big reason MacT went and made the deal happen, so I won't discount their growing importance in sports. I'm not a traditionalist by any means.
I think in a league where Chris Kunitz is a top 10 scorer you sometimes need some solid stats to cut through the bullpoop. On the other hand, you can't rely on conventional wisdom to tell you that Parenteau can only produce with Tavares for example. So advanced stats can help both ways there.
As far as the Penner discussion goes, I just look at the current makeup of the team, and see that we've got a long road ahead and don't see that a personality risk in Penner is worth the player that he is in the short term. Again, that's just for our team: Philly for example is chock full of older, less impressionable guys, they're used to high turnover of the leadership/key players and they've had their fare share of strong personalities. Whatever negative qualities Penner has might be more easily it for a team like that.
So it's not that I would discount the usefulness of what those stats tell you about players, it's just moreso that I don't weight them as heavily as TheNugeIsHuge might. - Morris
lol. If there's something I see in a game that isn't shown in the stats, I'll argue for it.
Nuge's underlying numbers said he played better than he did last year, and I definitely saw that. The score sheet did not |

so a .8PPG compared to a .806PPG? with more years in the league? lol - TheNugeIsHuge
I never said that Kessel's numbers were better in those years, other guy used Kessel's years in the NHL as an 18, 19 and 20 yr old, and I simply showed if you used his point totals during the same age Eberle was in the NHL, their point totals were very similar...not lopsided in Ebs favour like he said. |

I think the fact of the matter is that him saying "Kessel > any Oilers forward" is admitting defeat, because the lack of specificity implies that there are a couple Oilers forwards that are in the running. Even if Kessel were better, I'd rather have 4 forwards that are "almost" as good as Kessel and better than any other TO forward. - Morris
I wasn't the one who said Kessel>any Oilers forward to begin with, I was somewhat defending the guy who did because some Oil fans were saying how ridiculous it was, blha, blah, blah...I was just pointing out that, Kessel is at least as good as every Oiler forward, and its not as far stretched as some guys believe it to be...Kessel has been top8 in NHL scoring each of the past 2years.
Personally, I would take Hall over Kessel, and maybe Eberle (although I think Ebs regressed a little last year), but to say Kessel shouldn't be mentioned against those guys is a bit of a joke... |

I don't he shouldn't be mentioned, I actually like Kessel a lot as a player.
I just find it a little silly when people make these bold sweeping statements about different players at different stages in development in different situations. |
