In soccer a spanish player can't leave his club while under contract because he's homesick, the spanish team he wants to play for has to pay a transfer fee.

Everyone saying Kovy should be able to do whatever he wants, life is short, blah blah blah is wrong. If you sign a contract you have certain obligations you have to fulfill.

You don't want to make those obligations, don't sign a 15 year contract.

Kovy is a grown man, he can make his own choices. It may be selfish to do what's best for you but that is something you have to do because no one else will. Fact the US taxes on top of NHL escrow tax is just ridiculous. I don't blame him for leaving.

In soccer all the leagues have agreements with each other. NHL has no such thing. The leagues aren't even on the same continent. Im pretty sure a player from a european soccer team could retire and just leave for MLS.
