I was thinking today that Darcy better make sure he trades Vanek to a true contender because if he doesn't, settles for less than he is worth now and trades him to a team that might be out of the playoff race at the deadline, that team might get more for him at the deadline than the Sabres get this summer. Darcy has (frank)ed himself again. He should have dealt him at last season's deadline.

So if that is the case then that limits what teams Darcy should trade him to and New Jersey should be out of the picture even if they are for some reason interested.

I don't think they wanted to get rid of Vanek until he said he didn't want to be around for a long rebuild. So now it's up to Vanek basically to if he wants to stay or not.

GARTH: No way the Sabres would even come close to getting what you want. Multiple young players who would play in Buffalo for many years in exchange for a guy who will be UFA in a year? It's not gong to happen. If NJ wants Vanek, they can get him next summer for nothing. If NJ were to trade for him now, Buffalo can expect nothing more than a minor league prospect or two and perhaps a mid-round draft pick. (Perhaps they can get Riley Boychuk back.)
