not saying you arenot correct but on this miserable team who is even close

We got rid of the two people who constantly outplayed him, who also happened to be the majority of his line mates over 5 of the last 6 seasons. Roy and Pominville.

And I'm not even going to get into the Ryan Miller arguments tonight.

Good for him. He'll probably get a decent amount of time on the big club. Guy had some serious wheels.

Roy did NOT outplay Vanek, and Pommer is a maybe.

And yet he was still well over a point/game this season, despite losing linemates.

You'd rather have a 36 year old Iginla over TV or the fragile Vinny LeCavalier?.....I agree that TV is better than Semin and Carter but Vanek definitely has worth...
- sabresnumberonefan

Really? At this point in their careers, you'd rather have Iginla, Heatley, Hossa, Gaborik, Nash, Ryan, Spezza or Lecavailler?

That's all you then. I'd actually argue that Ovechkin, Parise and Perry are the only wings that I'd rather have than Vanek right now.

Just my opinion, but I think he's better than those other dudes.

- truthbluth

Really?

Iggy? Gaborik is pretty much a worse version of Vanek. I'd take vinny in his prime but not now. You'd take Heatley?

- Sabresfan-365

Why does the comparison have to be "in the now".

I'd rather have any of those other players on the Sabres over the course of their respective careers than Vanek over his, except the 2 players I listed -- Carter and Semin.

Yep. He had his best years with us, too. It's weird seeing that he's already 27... Only 2 years younger than Vanek.

I was thinking today that Darcy better make sure he trades Vanek to a true contender because if he doesn't, settles for less than he is worth now and trades him to a team that might be out of the playoff race at the deadline, that team might get more for him at the deadline than the Sabres get this summer. Darcy has (frank)ed himself again. He should have dealt him at last season's deadline.

So if that is the case then that limits what teams Darcy should trade him to and New Jersey should be out of the picture even if they are for some reason interested.

Im not the one who said "over the last 10 years", those were your words. Maybe you shouldve said 8 years since thats how many years hes actually played in the NHL.

I just don't think it should matter. Darcy doesn't have a gun to his head with Vanek. Not yet anyway. If he cannot resign Vanek, he should try to get a piece that he actually wants, not just settling for the best deal of the moment. If he waits until the deadline, he'll get a 1st rd pick + prospects. Things happen, and plans change. Their are a few teams out there with a closing window that might me interested in parting with big time prospects and picks if something happens. If, for example, San Jose were to start the season hot and then lose Marleau to injury, I could see them trading the farm for Vanek, since their window is closing. Maybe Nashville will need a scorer. Lots of things could happen, Darcy's been patient this long, no need to rush it.

I haven't been a huge fan of Vanek. Too many games he's unnoticeable. His play is so inconsistent from all world to start last year, to Nathan Gerbe-esk to end the year. That has been how he has played his entire career, hot and cold. I would hope the Sabres best player was more productive on a regular basis.

Even if, and I say big if he's been a top 30 NHL player over the course of the last 5-6 years, he's been paid like a top 10 forward so I'm not sure where this "Vanek is under appreciated " nonsense started
